Adam Lane - Zero Degree Music

This is Lane's latest CIMP date--if you've heard Fo(u)r Being(s) & DOS you'll know why I was looking forward to this one a lot. Lane's on bass, Vinny Golia on tenor and soprano, Vijay Anderson on drums (a new name to me). A number of the compositions are old favourites from Lane's previous CIMP dates, such as the seesawing "Intonations for Being" (which here gets a real workout, from swaying groove to pellmell race). The flavour here is a lot closer to classic Coltrane circa the 1961 Vanguard sessions, though Golia also has an Evan Parker moment on "In Our Time". Anderson is quite striking, with a very personal take on the the patented triplety Elvin Jones feel (sample "Intonations..."). I think my only reservation about Lane is that he does seem to write the same tune over & over again, typically using a groovy pedal point riff, though the way he elaborates this can be quite different--witness "The Genius of El Segundo", "Dance" or "Intonations" here, which go through a lot of costume changes, sometimes every few bars. But it's pretty infectious music--some CIMPs can be hard work (furious, long-haul free jazz that needs to hit me in the right mood), but this one I like to put on just for a casual spin: it rocks.

I think even if you're not a CIMP fan you won't have any problems with the sound quality on this one: Lane has a big, prominent bass sound on here, & all the instruments are registered clearly.

Thanks, Nate. I stopped buying CIMP releases because of their lousy sound, and though I know it's been discussed elsewhere, I can't remember why they record as they do when it so noticeably results in poor quality.

I have mixed feelings about CIMP's spartan aesthetic, but there are many discs where it works out just fine--this is one.

Love it to, but the best of the last bunch of Cadence/ CIMP is for me "The Gauchi Trio" (with Bisio and Rosen) "Long Night Waiting" (Cadence).

Another tenor/ bass/ drums session from a new comer.

Stephen Gauchi is quite close to James Finn in a less frenetic way but very a catchy one.

The booklet explains that Gauchi suffers of a "severe hearing loss" since the age of nine but don't explain if he wears any hearing "stuff" for that matter.

aniway, you can't guess that he has this strong hearing problem when listenning to the record.

A one to have.
I think than the "Captain" will particularly like it.

I saw the Lane trio right before the headed up to the great north to record this. They were in excellent form that night. Golia stuck to tenor and soprano and was tirelessly inventive on both horns.
