npr's bob edwards is sorely missed...

i am just curious whether anybody else misses mr bob edwards???

maybe not... but my morning drive is on the music cd and tape a lot more often now...since npr dumped bob from their morning show morning edition.

edwards is the best in the business. i think bob trumped them all and that includes cronkite, jennings, or brokaw...

bob edwards was the voice and anchor of nprs morning edition for years which i think was the best show on radio for years. bob was unceremoniously booted from morning edition and now is heard on satellite radio...

morning edition has bogged down with 3 dimwits who can't coordinate nor edit a news show. the show continually drags into trivial boring, maudlin & innane personal detail...bob edwards was masterful in interviews, now the interviews are anemic.

it has become news suited for the cable tv lifetime network...boo hoo hoo stuff all morning long. thank god all things considered is still kickin' for the ride home.

I agree that Edwards' voice is missed, but you do realize that many, if not most, of those interviews were scripted by the same producers on the show now?

A lot of the filed reporters had complained about him for years, saying he was disengaged and phoning it in.

Frankiepopgoesthedamnweasel,
I hate to admit it, but in 5 years satellite will be cleaning the collective clocks of the likes of NPR and other speciality stations. Hope I'm 100% wrong.

I will never pay for satellite radio. That's nuts. Give a portion of my monthly bread to a beam falling out of the sky? In your dreams, techno-scoundrels.

Of course, we're blessed here in NoVa/DC. We have C-Span radio. It's free, no commercials, no subscription, no pledge drives, and they are not supported by taxes. Only draw back is 75% of the time they are drive-off-a-cliff boring.

i already pay for radio...and i think it smokes...worth every penny and that aint much..granted i love radio and listen often...i dont pay for tv nor do i even have an antennae ...not even rabbit ears......dvds and vhs only...but the radio...oh ohoh...

low cost, low commercials...good music...cspan, npr news, npr talk and bbc...traditional commercial radio is absolute dead...serves no purpose...it's a plethora of interesting matters

i think music may improve more with stern climbing on board and the bbc's expanding role in this area....hopefully channel 4 will land on sirius as well.....

Fpop. tell it as it is.

I noticed right after Bob Edwards left, that NPR ran about five separate stories in succession about how to prepare for an expensive wedding.

I stopped listening shortly thereafter.

So, fpop is right, NPR has become a station for tweety boys and their bride's maids.

Bob "Ett-wards" was terribly boring. If only they'd sack Carl Kasell too, his pathetic, drunken attempts to read me the news are nauseating.

I haven't noticed a big change in content since Bob left.

They always do some stuff I don't care for, like that stupid "hidden kitchens" series and "this I believe"....Zzzzzzzz.

No problem. I wasn't trying to be an ass, just having a bit of fun. Sorry to rile you so.

FWIW, although we listen to different radio stations because of our different locations, I share your love of intelligent speech radio.

NPR has gone from being a news channel that ran occasional interesting news features to being the "women's page" for the radio.

Stories about weddings and food and the "essays" that amount to the equvalent of the 'drama of the broken teacup."

Frankiepopgoesthatdamnweaselonceagain,
Have you noticed that NPR is becoming more and more like that SNL parody? Sometimes it's so damn soporific that I gots ta run the 100 meter dash multiple times in succession!
Or play something on the Fender to get the languishing heart rate up.

Frankiepopsickletoes,
Maybe someone can tell me what old Popper did that was wrong? I once received a whole cartload of hate mail from the crazies at a guitarist's website for transgressions such as stating that Pat Metheny's cd
"Zero Tolerance for Silence" was nothing more than boring self-indulgent experimentation on the part of one of the most gifted musicians I ever heard, or Clapton has nothing more to prove to Gen X'ers or Y'ers who think he's boring, or that BB King's collaboration with Clapton was just a pedestrian recording, or that Yngwie Malmsteen emphasizes boring shredding pyrotechnics on the guitar instead of lyrical clarity. I got many more that I won't subject you guys to, nothing Conan Nadoesque mind you... but the crazies live for this stuff.

Mr. Pop,
Your transgressions are totally anodyne. You deserve a free pass and a get out of jail free card. Time for bigger fish to fry... such as the vapid
mutterings of NPR, which all too frequently causes REM sleep.

Regardless of what anyone might think of the program, NPR is tickled pink with their decision to replace Edwards. In spite of the dire predictions, Morning Edition's audience grew by 800,000 in the past year....a 7% gain over last year to a weekly 13.2 million listeners. NPR still regrets the way the Edwards replacement was handled, as they should.
