FYI: Shirley Horn

I just got this from John Clayton :

>>... ( Shirley ) is not doing well. I received this from one of Shirley's best friends,
singer Gail Marten:

"I don't know if you know that Shirley Horn is quite ill. She has been moved
from hospital critical care to Spellman Nursing Home in DC. She is
conscious, but as yet unable to speak. She is on dialysis, breathing
assistance and feeding tube. We are hoping for the best."

I checked with Gail--Shirley most definitely would appreciate flowers,
cards, prayers, etc. Here is her contact information and where cards and
flowers can be sent:

Shirley Horn
Gladys Spellman Specialty Hospital and Nursing Center
2900 Mercy Lane
Cheverly, MD 20785

Shirley's music has probably touched most of us. If you have a chance,
don't hesitate to reach out to her. You'll be giving something back.

Warmly,
John

I am saddened by this. I've been a Shirley Horn fan for a very long time.

Oh dear! I've adored Shirley Horn for several years. I've been lucky in that I've seen her perform live nearly every time she's come to NYC. The last time I saw her was at "Au Bar" and she left the stage for a very, very long time and when she came back she had put on a prosthetic leg and played the piano. I later found out that that was the first time she had played the piano since losing her leg (foot?) I wish her the best and I hope she gets well!!

Sigh. I saw her only once a few years at SF Jazz and I am so glad I did. I've enjoyed her music for years. Sending up good thoughts and many prayers.

Shirley Horn...one of the great "What If?" stories in jazz: When Miles Davis discovered her in 1960, he wanted her to sing with his group. She didn't do it, instead went back to D.C. to raise a family. Can you imagine how jazz might have turned out if one of the great jazz voices and possibly the greatest of all jazz innovators had joined forces?

Thanks for the contact information.

Wow. I didn't see this until now. That's sad news. I love Shirley Horn's music and find it a great inspiration. I'm hoping for the best, too.

When I bought my first CD player, "You Won't Forget Me" was one of the first CDs I bought. The title song with Miles was incredible and I was hooked. I hope she recovers.
