Mulgrew Miller's 50th

My favorite living piano player, Mulgrew Miller, will celebrate his 50th birthday with a bunch of gigs at the Jazz Standard. Joe Lovano will be there a couple nights, Kenny Barron will be there one night, and on one night the beloved Wingspan band will be reunited, although not with Kenny Garrett.

Details at The Jazz Standard.

Unfortunately, I will not be on hand for any of this. If anybody reading this attends, please post reviews and recieve my eternal gratitude, leavened with a certain amount of envy, naturally.

It's 2 nights with Barron, and I plan to be at one of them.

We were lucky enough to have him out here at Stanford Workshop for a few concerts and his teaching chores. He is quite incredible!

The new trio CD "Live At Yoshi's Vol.II" [Maxjazz] is slammin'; a can't miss pick-up!

I saw him with Betty Carter way back in 1980 (and IIRC with the Mercer-led Ellington band before that) and have seen him in a number of combos since. Wish I could catch some of the sets at the Jazz Standard this week (and later this month as well, when George Cables comes in).

Maybe we'll go tonight. I wanted to go Sunday -to see him with the Wingspan band - but family obligations out of town are snafuing that.
