Song X 20th Anniversary!

The Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman collaboration call Song X will be re-release with six new songs in August by Nonesuch.

Here the text on the http://www.patmethenygroup.com/ Web Site:

Over the next year, Pat and Nonesuch will be rereleasing the Pat Metheny titles previously released on the Geffen and Warner Bros label. The first out of the box is SONG X. This year is the 20th Anniversary of the release of this landmark recording. It has been remixed and remastered and, as bonus, Pat has added 6 new tunes from that recording session that have never been released before! The new tracks add another layer to understanding the performances on this post-bop meeting of the harmolodic minds with jazz master Ornette Coleman. Amazon will be taking pre-orders of this release starting right now.

Rock. This remains one of my favorites, a formative album for me. Great news to get more music from the session!

Now that's great news and I've got the perfect gift for the woman I love.
Considering the few jazz she listens to, I tend to be amazed by the number of times she listened to this one over the years.

Cool, since this album was the inspiration for the other moniker that I have used at KSJS when I did subversive rock fill-ins, Madame X.

Just put it into my player. I don't know how I can enjoy this record so much, but I have been doing so for seven of its twenty years. Objectively, I should find fault with the undisciplined outpouring of noise. But it feels so good.

The new tracks are all on a par with the rest of the recording, I would say. Two of them have Metheny convincing Ornette to "play on" provided chord changes (PM says in the liner notes, and it sounds somewhat plausible to these ears)! One of them is only a 15 sec. transition from one track to another.

The remastering sounds great; the old CD sounded dreadful, as pretty much all CDs of that time do. Everything sounds *a lot* better now -- alto, guitar, drums, percussion, bass, electronics in one guise or another (drums and guitar synth). And, of course, Ornette's violin.

I love Pat Metheny but I've got to say: this album is utter crap. It hurts the ears and does nothing either to the spirit or the soul.

"The Way Up" does absolutely nothing for my spirit or soul.. but to these ears Song X remains the best music Metheny has ever recorded.

You have to love Ornette Coleman to enjoy the album. It's his music.

Pat Metheny / Ornette Coleman - Song X -- Twentieth Anniversary

Has anyone listened to this one? I'm kind of hesitant because I don't like the noisy side of PM too much, but this review made me kinda curious.

Christ, I have to admit I haven't listened to Song X in years. I bought it when it came out on LP and a big time Metheny fan gave the CD (in disgust) to me back in '93 or '94.

For some reason, I find the largely positive posts on this thread surprising mainly because the recording's so controversial (at least it was when it came out). Anyway, I'm looking forward to the re-issue. My ears have kind of grown since the '90s.

By the way, if you get Jazz Times they're doing some type of anniversary issue with some "Before and After" reprints. Joe Pass (I believe) comments on "Song X".

it's not a very accurate reveiw ...metheny was out there experimenting around quite a bit in the early 80s with 80/81 and remember rejoicing is almost all ornette songs except a few free improvisations on side two.........and it harbors a lot of old and bygone myths that we already discussed and resolved in the 80s which have been laid to rest...cept a few figs still wallow in it though...

as a review...flunk

he misses the history and covers a lot of ground already driven over and dealt with...

That's quite an improvement over your attitude expressed in the other thread:

As I recall, The Wire loved it when it came out. Controversial among Metheny fans, not among Coleman fans, I imagine. (Definitely hard to love more than one of Ornette's violin solos on the disc...)

I feel good!

I don't remember if i have the vinyl or the cd (it was the end of the vinyl era in my country). I was surprise by the music and the improvisations. I was young and my ears were not used to all kind of jazz. In that time, i bought one disc jazz for ten discs rock. Sometimes, it was easy and other times it was difficult to enjoy it (Song X).

As the time goes by, today, i'm a jazz listener. Now, i'm familiar with a a lot of variety of jazz. Some easy one and more difficult one. For a exemple with Pat Metheny, it's more easy to listen "Letter From Home" than "80/81" (piece Open).

I just bought the new one XX Anniversary. I just feel good! First of all, i remember some of my experience with jazz. Second, the music is assimilate twenty years later. I discover with new ears! Wow! I love this disc. I remember in John Fordham book call "Jazz", In the selective discography, Song X had a full page of good words.

Hope that Pat Metheny will release all the Geffen records with remaster mix and lots of bonus!

The Geffen records will sound great with Ornette on them. BTW, I like him more than Keith Jarrett, thats for sure.

someone for christsakes get it right :- this is an ORNETTE COLEMAN ALBUM AND NOT A PAT METHENY RECORD most of the material + the bonus stuff is still Coleman's and Metheny gets props for getting it re-released , remix and remastering etc but the music made is O.C.'s baby I count it its a major part of his catalogue.

I suppose it would be more accurate to say PM helped OC rise from obscurity.

You can write all the sarcastic horseshit you want :
PM's so-called "celebrity" was based on saccharin sickly lite fusion pap ,
on Song X, OC helped him to play.

My dear friend, you have a Christian name, but I'm astounded to see you sowing HATE all over this board!

What's with you, young lad, where does all the aggression come from?

Why are you so obsessed and frustrated, Luther?

Greatness can come in many dimensions: historical importance, influence, ability to move large numbers of people, technical brilliance, scope, etc.

When we use the word, we need to be clear exactly what we have in mind.

These things considered you will have to admit that, by principle, the master is superior to the servant, even though he could be younger.
