Anyone running or working in a CD shop?

Curious and interested.
Curious to know what people here think: is it still financially viable to own a jazz (mostly) CD shop? Obviously, it can depend on a number of factors, such as location, ads,... Where I live now, I have found only one good jazz CD shop, the other shops with some jazz music are either multimedia/electronics stores, or FNAC and the likes. There used to be one in Montreux, I have been told, but it closed down a few years back.

i work at a CD department at my local Barnes and Noble. jazz will always be a specialty idiom with its own section of a larger entity.

i was just thinking of working part-time at the Barnes and noble at the Woodfield mall in Schaumburg, IL.

i once worked at a record store on Fullerton and thought it would be a good idea since that's all we have these days are Cd's.

the only thing wrong with working anywhere is that the
"customer is always right". BUNK!!

when you are in a music section of any bookstore or library the customer has to count on you. you know where the items are at, not the whinny patron.

yeah working part-time is a bummer. its not the regular job and the disadvantage is low wage and the person who you are waiting on is impatient, wants quick service and you get bad mouthed for your service.

but i would still do it in a heartbeat. nothing like taking your time away when you get bored.

that's if, provided you are single, no kids and in-laws. :roll eyes:

I worked for almost four years in the jazz section of the local HMV (three full-time), up until they started "restructurating" (that is, firing people who had been working for them for years), and therefore killing the little spirit of independence our section had...

I now work in a second-hand bookstore that also carries CDs (about ten thousand; we try to have a decent jazz section, but our specialty is really classical).

Curious how many of you actually go into retail outlets anymore?

I worked in one for a while but it went out of business a number of years ago. It was too hip for the location but survived for quite a while when it was the only show around. Then someone opened a generic music store near the large grocery stores a few miles away, sales at our store dropped ten percent overnight, and it never recovered.

I'd not work retail again, though I enjoyed the job when I had it.

I owned my own classic movie and vintage music store for years. Too many stories for this early in the morning. It worked for years until the advent of mega-super-kill-yer-ass-off stores and the frigging internet and every dildo in the world selling their shit on line, along with slayers like amazon.com selling used merchandise, etc.

I'm running, on average about four times a week. I cycle and lift weights on the in-between days.

I'm not working in a CD shop.

Unable to resist,
Larry

At least you're not running in a CD shop. That could be hazardous, especially if there are any customers present. Another reason why I prefer to shop online these days.
