President Clinton's 'Favorite Hits' CD on Sale Soon

President Clinton's 'Favorite Hits' CD on Sale Soon

Former President Clinton is coming out with a CD of his favorite tunes. Organizers say it'll be called “The Bill Clinton Collection: Selections from the Clinton Music Room.”

It's planned as the first in a series of discs of Clinton's favorites. The songs featured include “My One and Only Love” by John Coltrane, Mile Davis's “My Funny Valentine” and “Chelsea Morning” by Judy Collins.

The CD goes on sale in about a month at the Clinton Museum Store in Little Rock, Arkansas.

I didn't know Judy Collins covered "Chelsea Morning." She'd just never leave those Joni tunes alone, would she? Leech-like.

Be sure whatever he selects will be Politically Correct. Blacks, women, jews, Hispanics, etc. and all genres will be represented.

I bet he did a focus group on his slections before the CD was released, not wanting to offend any special interest group.

If the song selection is politically calculated, then jazz is already over-represented with two cuts, isn't it?

What do you think he can include to satisfy the Jewish demographic that won't offend Arab/Muslim voters, and vice-versa?

Now, now, now.... when I saw Joni live she was very appreciative that she had had just had her first "hit record, thanks to my friend Judy" ("Both Sides Now").

Judy helped popularize Joni, as she had done to other deserving, lesser known songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Richard Farina. Not all covers are inherently insidious, some serve a useful purpose. And, FWIW, I usually liked Judy's arrangements at the time (Joshua Rifkin) better than Joni's.

I'm buying, even if I prefer to have Starbucks select my music for me.

I have a feeling most of the copies of these Clinton CDs will end up being gifts of some sort.

I know she sold a lot of records. I never really understood why people preferred her stuff to the original articles, but to each, as they say. IMHO, the most heinous Collins cover of all was of Williamson's "First Girl I Loved."

I love Leonard Cohen, and certainly prefer his originals to Judy's covers, but I doubt that he would have come to the public's attention without Judy Collins, who recorded a lot of his work before anybody else was doing it.

She certainly does way too many sugary version of songs, but she's also done a lot of great stuff. Her version of Richard Farina's "Pack Up Your Sorrows" (with Farina on dulcimer) and "Hard Lovin' Loser" are significantly better than the originals by Richard and Mimi (although I like those, too). And her early albums -- "Fifth Album" and before -- are strictly folk, none of the pop influences she took on later, and they're all filled with fine traditional performances.

She did some great Jacques Brel covers with Rifkin.

I prefer Joni's originals to Judy's covers, but I'm not nearly as big a fan of her's as you are. I really dug Joni's first two albums a lot, but after that merely liked her stuff without being very enthusiastic about it.

I think it goes further than that. Judy's (and Tom Rush's) first recordings of Joni Mitchell's songs actually predate Joni's own versions. I would say that Joni's success was a direct result of Collins and Rush introducing her tunes. Of course, Joni's versions are still the best.

Maybe his name is spelled correctly on the CD.

That's right. Some examples are "Both Sides Now" (Collins), which SqDC Steve mentioned; "Urge for Going" (Rush); and "The Circle Game" (Rush).

This compilation CD idea reminds me of a cookbook several years ago that was put out by some guy who used to work for Ted K. and his family as their cook. The book was Ted K.'s favorite recipes. Like anyone wants to buy a book of recipes for dishes favored by an overweight Irishman with a bulbous nose.

That being said, I'd be much more likely to buy the Clinton CD. Who knows, maybe you could suddenly develop an ability to pick up younger chicks.

I'll take ten.

Maybe, maybe not. My post was a cut and paste from Yahoo, and the MSN release contains the identical misspelling, so I'm guessing the press release from the Clinton Library may have had it wrong to begin with.

What? No Z.Z. Top? I'm sure Georgie would try to find something by that lil' ol' band from Texas that's politically correct enough to include.

How 'bout "Jesus Just Left Chicago"?

Or Keller Williams "God is My Palm Pilot"?
