If the cover is as Hustleresque as you are describing, I'm happy that he didn;t use it on his duo with William Parker. Somehow I think that William may not have been too thrilled with that.

I'm curious to see these. I've got a couple of Dorgon discs, and the packaging is pretty minimal - plastic baggies with the disc protected by 2 pieces of brown cardboard with crayon lettering, and a photocopy of "notes" that are completely made up (i.e. Dorgon playing in 30s big bands...)

I remember his recordings being particularly difficult to review because of all the bullshit on the packaging. Like he'd say he was playing C-melody when he wasn't or was joined by various sidemen who weren't on the discs. It was pretty annoying, actually.

OK, just saw them. The one, Smell the Glove, is acceptable (just breasts, which for some reason are taboo in US culture but Canadians, like Europeans, don't care - our television quite regularly shows them - and a bit of rope) but far less artistic than a Zorn bondage cover. Bumbelklatt...yeah, maybe he's gone a bit too far!

Walt - when I reviewed the early Dorgon discs, I think it was III and 9, the bullshit wasn't the biggest problem. I just found them to be pretty mediocre musically. Not sure what I'd thnk of them now, after not hearing them for several years, and no idea what he's doing now.

You're right, Dan. Maybe the baloney would have been worth slogging through if the music had been good, but--at least on the two or three discs I heard--it was pretty lame.

his packaging is normally pretty hilarious, haven't seen the new ones. and as for his music, if Dorgon and Walt Horn were both performing the same night, I'd choose Dorgon every time (well, most of the time I'd probably skip both and stay home, but if I had to choose...)

"Get a room!", he yelled, then looked around and said, "Wait a minute. Where am I?"

Thank you, Jesse.

The aforementioned posts must have been deleted just as I was saying, "Thank you, Jesse."

Just to clarfiy Walto asked that I delete the whole thread. I felt that it didn't warrant deleting - so I just deleted his and Jon's diatribe
Maybe it might be best to start all over...

well, FWIW, I'm well aware I'm a sizable part of the problem here, but so are most of the people who posted in this thread (Walt, Pete, and yes, even you, Jesse). there are some factual inaccuracies in your post, Jesse, but it's probably not worth going through them, just nitpicking. and yes, I'm well aware that my interaction with you is a reason behind you pulling back your presence here, which I felt pretty bad about and which is why I was so quick to welcome you back.

I do think that the personal interactions here stretch over years and that quite often people not directly involved aren't fully aware of the entire specific history (for instance, Ron and I have had a fair amount of back and forths over the years, I believe starting with him telling me to calm down in a musical discussion he wasn't involved in right after 9/11 (because of 9/11) when he lives in Alaska and I live about a mile from where the WTC used to stand). I have a long memory, and I'm not usually willing to let bygones be bygones easily (although there are exceptions, Adam Hill and I have been getting along reasonably well for quite some time now).

as for Walt, he and I have quite the history, and you can't judge what's going on from one thread alone. I said what I said and I'll stick to it, I don't see why it's especially crossing the line. one musician calls another one lame, I point out that I feel the first one is lamer. you feel like that's crossing the line, maybe it is. that's what I said, and I'll stick to it.

again FWIW, I almost never delete my own posts first in these back and forths, I did it in one thread in the Alley because it was getting out of control, and I thought I could stop it right then. I pulled back my insult of Ron after one minute because I thought it went too far, but he caught it anyway. and I deleted my posts in this thread after I saw that Walt's were gone already, not first.

anyway, more meta-discussion, the specialty of this site. I'm not an especially friendly person to people I don't consider my friends, and I don't consider many people here to be my friends. respect is earned, and I'll continue to treat people respectfully who I feel do the same to me.

yeah, why wouldn't it be? what makes Dorgon's music a more valid target for criticism than Walt's?
