Tribute to Nina Simone

Jazz Arts at Bat Cave is a new foundation devoted to jazz warriors, bon vivants and space cadets everywhere. Headed by Lucianne Evans of Evans & Coppola, it's first concert will be June 4th at 7:30, in Tryon, NC, and will be a Memorial Tribute to Nina Simone, whose birthplace was Tryon, NC. Following will be a monthly series of exclusive house concerts, jazz salons, and special prix-fixe dinner concerts in select locations throughout WNC. Anyone with an excellent grand/baby grand piano, interested in holding a house concert, please reply.

Nina Simone is well-loved by the community of Tryon for her legendary stardom, and her memory will live on forever. Recognized a prodigy as a child, certain forward thinking members of Tryon nurtured her talent in her youth, supplying piano lessons, and support. A traumatic experience happened for her though,
at a recital when she was only ten - a well attended event at the local library, when her parents were asked to leave their seats to make room for some whites...a dehumanizing experience felt round the world, as reflected in her later music. It is one of history's mistakes which today's Tryon, and the South in general, is healing from and for. She was eventually accepted on scholarship
to Julliard, where...the rest is history.

The Evans & Coppola Quartet are no strangers to Tryon either, nor to the music of Nina Simone, which they have naturally covered in their long partnership, a partnership which has yielded FLAMINGO, a CD recently named "Top Vocals of 2002" in the Jazz Education Journal. They will explore deep favorites, and one or two of their own originals inspired by brave spirits like Nina, such as a
new original vocalese to the Bobby Timmons classic, "Moanin.' A few tickets are still available at www.evansandcoppola.com. It is filling up fast, is exclusive, and will be sold out. This concert also features a tenor saxophonist from Greenville, SC, veteran Moss Mack, and drummer Sonny Thornton, and other invited guests.
