Reissues of Note
Just got an email from ECM about:
Julian Priester
Love, Love
Love, Love was recorded in 1974 and features a who's-who of players from the dawn of jazz rock. Heavy spacious grooves have made this a lasting underground favorite, and more than 30 years later, this slice of proto-cyberfunk is still thoroughly enjoyable.
Dave Holland / Barre Phillips
Music From Two Basses
Themes and improvisations for two basses - this landmark recording from 1972 is still a reference recording for bass players around the world. The improvising throughout is exemplary, and this introduction to two of ECM's major musicians was the first album of bass duos ever issued.
Steve Kuhn
Trance
Many improvising piano players consider Steve Kuhn the most outstanding exponent of their instrument and this 1974 recording showcases his elegant and lyrical pianism as well as his more propulsive and energetic side. The strong band on this record is anchored by the dream-team rhythm section of Steve Swallow and Jack DeJohnette.

A great recent reissue is the Emanem release of John Stevens' New Cool. A great post-bop quartet date originally released on some obscure label called The Jazz Label.
Pretty much a no-name band, Byron Wallen on trumpet, flugelhorn; Ed Jones on soprano and tenor saxophones; and Gary Crosby on bass, this is a smoking hot set. Wallen, in particular, kicks ass on it, and I'd love ot hear more recordings by him. Stevens is a monster, as usual, and this one is heartily recommended to those who like the Trevor Watts/Stevens collaborations like Prayer for Peace, Interactions... or No Fear.
I'd been hunting for this since pretty much its original release in 1992, and never seen it before. Definitely my favorite reissue so far this year.

How are the liners?
I believe the original gate fold had a great photo in the center.

Haven't checked them out yet, but the transfer sounds mighty fine. 30+ minutes of bonus solo material ain't nothing to sneeze at either.

The gatefold photo was for LRG/the Maze/SII Examples. This one has reproductions of parts of the score for the alto quartet. Terry Martin's original notes are included and I added a bit about the history. I hope it brings pleasure.
