Angry Has any jazz cd been as backordered as this one?

Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945

Just about every damn website is like..."backordered"... 2-5 weeks... Guess the NY Times article did it's job...

Can anybody get this? Not sure when (or from where) I'll get my copy....

any suggestions?

who you can PM, and should be able to mail you one directly.

That is how I did it, and I have been enjoying this puppy for a couple weeks now.

Even though Amazon had a disclaimer like the one above, I got mine within a week.

I think the problem is distribution for Uptown as much as demand.

Not a distribution problem but hard to keep up with orders. The 5th pressing (I think) will be delivered midweek. The last pressing (2000+) went out last week. This is an interesting experience.

I am curious why PC thinks it is a distribution problem.

Chuck, sorry for the misapprehension. It's just that I thought I saw longish delivery times from online retailers for other Uptown titles. I'm pleased to be corrected.

Marc Edelman, from Sharp Nine, told me that he would trade all of the Jazz Radio airplay for a release for one positive Times review.

Now I see why.

"Longish delivery times" are because the retailer does not stock them, not because they are not easily available to them. Why blame the original source?

Once again, I'm happy to stand corrected.

By the way, wasn't a 1945 Philadelphia performance by Diz & Bird also found not too long ago? I thought I read that somewhere, but I never heard any followup.

About 6 minutes was found. We initially tried to include this material but the "owner" demanded "mastering rights" to the entire project. The material is now available as part of a Philology cdr - so I'm told.

IIRC, it was 2 partials. Don't hold me to that, but I think that is the result.

DMG had it as two days ago when I ordered it.

I'm very much looking forward to some Bird and Diz I've never heard before.

That’s right, Bird and Diz played at the Academy of Music, in June of 1945. If my memory serves me correctly it will be an Ember release. I’m having dinner tomorrow night with someone whom I’m sure will have all the details. I will post an up-date.

Downtown Music Gallery, which has a bricks-and-mortar store in NYC and an online store:

http://downtownmusicgallery.com/Main/index.htm

I suggest that you search for just "Gillespie." If you're taken to the main search page, search for just "Gillespie" again. Then scroll down to see the search results, and you'll see the album ("available"). I can't link you to the result.

Alternatively, call them, e-mail them, or fax them:

Phone: (212) 473-0043 - Toll Free: (800) 622-1387
Fax: (212) 533-5059

General Correspondence:
dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com

and they'll take care of you.

Have you considered Vince's suggestion, J&R Music? I've seen several other online stores at which the album is listed as being readily available, but J&R seemed to be as good as any.

Dizmonk (AKA tranemonk), you should have ordered it from Chuck through this (or another) BB. His name happens to be mentioned on the back of the CD case , but besides that, he provides terrific service. And you know I've never steered you wrong on this or any other Board.

He's the first one named under "Special thanks," BEFORE Ira Gitler, Lorraine Gillespie, and 5 others. [We'll just talk about Chuck as if he isn't here. ]

Has any jazz cd been as backordered as this one?

Maybe not, but there are a helluva lot of titles out of print and not available at any price.

Count yer blessings.

It's on my wish list. I guess I'll wait until the supply increases.

How about ordering direct from the company?

The closest to that would be ordering direct from Chuck Nessa who, as mentioned above, was involved in the production of the CD and is assisting Uptown with its distribution. You can PM him through this Board to order it. Lots of us have already obtained it from Chuck.

I warehouse and ship all Uptown cds. If you want to order from me it will be $15 post paid in North America. You can contact me at nessarecords@earthlink.net. That is also my PayPal account. You can also send a check to Nessa Records, PO Box 394, Whitehall, MI 49461.

I usually ship same day and mail 1st class or priority, depending on the size of the order.

I can also supply Okka titles and my own recordings. FWIW, I have about 130 copies of the Art Ensemble box left. Contact me for lists.

Sorry if I have overstepped some limits of the list.

CN

Got mine and listened to it last night. It's as great as you're imagining it is if you haven't heard it, yet. It was great fun listening to some Bird and Diz I'd never heard before, and also to hear a young Max Roach with at least one foot still in the swing world. Talk about dropping some bombs. Toward the end, Big Sid Catlett takes over and, historical interest aside, cuts Max on that date.

Definitely the jazz release of the year. (I nearly said reissue of the year....)

Chuck, I hope you'll consider putting those lists (or links to the labels' catalogs) up on a website so that they'll be readily available to anyone who wants to read them.
