Help a Newbie out

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and to jazz, taking a break from HipHop, so I welcome any and all suggestions to start my jazz collection...

Give this thread a try--though you'll need to rob a bank to follow up all the suggestions!....

This could be a first step.

lovejones82, keep your eyes open. Check out the What Are You Listening To? thread.

But to give us a guide, what Jazz do you currently have? And what type of Jazz are you interested in?

Yes, that would help a lot if we knew where you are w/ the music at present.

There's a Penguin Guide To Jazz, a huge paperback book that gives you bio and CD information that's excellent. You can check it out at a big book store, Barnes & Noble or Borders etc. often has a copy in their music section. The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz, a 5 CD set, is also excellent with tracks from Early Jazz all the way to Avante-Garde, late 20th century jazz. It also has great liner notes telling all about the musicians and the tracks etc.
