IAJE Jan. 11-14, 2006 - NYC

who is planning on going?

after hearing last night that sue mingus is participating in at least one interesting-sounding panel discussion, launching a new educational project, and that the mingus dynasty, mingus big band, and mingus orchestra are playing, i can't wait!!!

At this time, I'd have to say I'll more than likely be going.

I thought that NYC was the scheduled sight every other year, as per the anouncement made 2 years ago[?].

In 2004 it wasNYC
2005 Long Beach
From what I understand:
2006 and 7 it's in NYC,
Then Long Beach in 08.
(I was wrong above)

We're just figuring out what Jazzcorner is going to do. We were hoping to do the Jazzcorner Jams within the hotel, but union problems after the shows in the ballrooms nix that idea. We've been offered space at a couple of clubs - so I will of course keep you posted.

I can't wait, can't wait! Oops, gotta raise some $$$ first. Keep those liner notes coming!

Every jazz fan who can possibly afford it should go to IAJE every year no matter where it is. There are an infinite number of reasons.

Ok, pardon me, folks.

But what exactly is the IAJE gathering about?

I understand what the IAJE is about, but what does the conference accomplish?

Also, can I donate money to such a cause? And if so, where does it go?

Scott;

The IAJE annual convention is the largest gathering of people in the 'jazz field'
each year. Musicians on the professional and student levels flock there, as well as radio, print, and all forms of broadcast media.

There's also a trade show element...record companies, publishers, instrument manufacturers, universities, summer camps, etc.

Also the U.S. Service bands are always in attendance.

Then there's performances....more than you could possibly catch, but worth trying to take as many in as you can. Add to that NYC clubs and venues are alive with what are referred to as 'showcases' for artists either attending the meet or who have something current being released....or in some cases a label does a showcase of it's roster musicians.

It's a great hang!

To answer the donation question... you may check www.iaje.org
They have education and outreach programs, and may accept donations[?]

AMEN....and sorry....I don't think of myself as necessarily a radio/media guy...more an enthusiastic fan, as are many of those who attend.

Ahem. In a word . . . yes!

Scott, I have a splendid plan. Send me a couple of grand, and Patti and I will go to IAJE and be in NYC together for the first time . . . ever. Please send me a PM for our mailing address.

I promise to take copious notes and give you a full report upon our return. In fact, I'll even send you updates from the road while it's in progress. Of course, I'd feel guilty if I didn't send you a few appropriate souvenirs as a token of our appreciation.

Thanks for your fullest consideration,

Father Thorne

Whoulda figured Father Thorne would be bitten by the sarcasm bug?

Heyy Fadda, the checks in the mail!!

JM, I'd give anything to attend, but unfortunately cannot.

Mike, I'll check over the site more thoroughly(I kinda looked over it the other night, but couldn't find any definitive info on contributions).

Either way, I hope anyone who attends has an absolute BLAST!!!! Sounds like a boatload of Jazz goodness!!

I plan to donate to IAJE, but have a question. There is a "home"(for lack of a better term)for older Jazz musicians. Does anyone know what I'm referring to? Kelly and I were looking for charities to donate money to this year, and I truly wanted to give to this "home" but for the life of me cannot remember what it is called.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please don't confuse sarcasm with creativity and desperation, Scott.

I'm not aware of a "home" for jazz musicians, but do know that some wonderful work is being done by an organization with which Lois and Jazz Corner are connected . . . The Jazz Foundation of America/Jazz Musicians' Emergency Fund. In fact, I believe that Lois continues to contribute to the JMEF for every CD purchased on Jazz Corner.

From their website:

"They have no pensions. They have no health insurance. They are sometimes too sick to work. They are sometimes even homeless. They are older now, and the phone doesn't ring like it used to, making the rent impossible to pay. They are the jazz musicians who pioneered this great art form. And they need us now.

The JMEF is committed to helping jazz professionals, especially older musicians, overcome their hard times and to help them get back on their feet."

I would encourage you to visit the JFA site and donate, if possible.

Up because I need to get my ducks in a row...

Now, who all is going to be there? I am thinking of paying the freight to attend like a real attendee this year, so I want to make sure I'll have plenty of JC pals to enjoy the music/festivities with. Now, who all is going and when? Thanks!
