Happy Birthday, Wayne Shorter

i am wishing wayne the absolute best of all that is possible! he is my very favorite living musician and composer! he's a genius. anybody who has not read the recent book about him should do so. it's an amazing, enlightening read.

happy, healthy, wayne, and many more to come!

xoxo

Happy Birthday to The Man! Again, due to this smilie-challenged board, you will have to imagine the festive banners, confetti, and a band playing happy birthday.

Yeah, the book. I have to check that out. Did he write it or did someone else?

a woman by the name of michele mercier (or a name close to that) wrote it with a LOT of input from "the man" himself! she spent a lot of time (over several years) with him and interviewed at length a lot of his closest friends/associates, etc., and last, but not least, she "got" (as in understood) him!! no easy task, believe me. we used to joke and say that he spoke "shorthand". fascinating book. fascinating man. i think you'll really love it, rainy.

One of the players who drew me into this obsession with the music, I'll be forever indebted. How does he manage to consistently look half his age?!?

i think the answer, at least in part, may be that he combines the wisdom of an elder with the seeking spirit and openess of a child! just my take on it.

Well, for the girl who never has time to read but still buys books, I'll put this one on the list.

Dude doesn't look that much different from the way he did 40 years ago.

Happy birthday, Master Shorter!!!

i think it's a very recent one! one of the reasons this discussion about his youthful look has been provoked.

Excellent choice, rené.

In a completely different mode, I heard one of my favorite tracks from Weather Report the other day . . . Zawinul's beautiful ballad, A Remark You Made, and damned near wept. Wayne, Joe and Jaco are so in-tune with one another. Alex and Manolo aren't exactly shabby, either.

I'd have to agree with you, Valerie. That photo likely isn't very old. I have a Coltrane DVD called The World According To John Coltrane, and Master Shorter is interviewed. And he looks, if you can believe it, even younger than he does in that picture. And that video was made in '93.

And let's be honest, he was no spring chicken in '93!!!

No "spring chicken"? Ummm . . . I'm about two years older now than Wayne was in 1993. I'm not saying I'm a "spring chicken", but age 60 is hardly something to mourn. Wayne was born on August 25, 1933.

So, at age 72, Mssr. Shorter is lookin' fine as wine in my book. I hope I look as young as he ten years from now.

LOTS OF "GREAT SAX"................ (works for me....)

And yes, Happy Birthday Wayne!

One of my early role models....his work with Blakey (I loved he and Freddie Hubbard's playing with the Jazz Messengers), his own Blue Note albums, and especially his earlier Weather Report....

His adventurousness & his own unique voice were values & attributes I have stuck to in my own playing over the years...

And of course his "interesting" personality; I love people who are completely themselves, no matter what or where that may be....
When I met him at a club in LA some years ago, I mentioned to him how I just missed meeting him on a visit he took to Hawaii. I happened to be off island the week he was there ( he knew & hung out with a lady friend of mine, and her family), and was quite bummed about it!

Well, he kept saying that no, he did meet me, that Bonnie had taken him out to see me play, and yes, we did meet! Well, I wasn't going to argue with him, cause hey, there's always the "astral plane"....!

Great guy, great musician......

Wayne's best friend Herbie also looks young for his age. They played some great music during their 2004 tour with Dave Holland and Brian Blade.
