Uh-oh!!

I just received this email from CD Universe. I wonder what that's going to mean for the price? They'll probably cancel the order if it's delayed very long.
Oh, well ...

Rumor is that Miles' estate has stopped the release. I have some calls out to see if it's true.

Boy, if this box gets stopped, can you imagine what those promo sets will fetch on eBay? Big bucks... VERY big bucks.

Any update on what the hell is going on with this set? I can't understand why these issues--whatever they are--don't seem to reach the public until literally the day before the box is supposed to be released. Already on Amazon there are two reviews of it, but yet it's not available...what the hell is going on?

I heard tonight that it was merely a production glitch, and that the new release date is October 25.

just for the record, the reason reported on Organissimo is:

"It will take 5-6 weeks to affix a sticker to the 20,000 copies of boxes printed that covers up the original 'Produced by Bob Belden and Adam Holzman' with 'Produced by Miles Davis Compilation Produced by Bob Belden and Adam Holzman' ...as per demand of Miles Davis Estate."

now this is getting silly:

"Earlier this month, Seth Rothstein, VP of Columbia Legacy, confirmed the release date of the Cellar Door as November 22 in the US. A week later someone closely involved e-mailed me with the message that "Vince Wilburn has put a kibosh on the whole thing again." Wilburn, Miles' nephew and a drummer in his uncle's band 1985-1987, is the leading voice in the Miles Davis Estate. He was also the person behind the first delay of the boxed set release. The latest word is that the release is abandoned altogether, but Columbia Legacy tells me today (October 28), that they continue to be confident that the set will come out, and that they are still hoping for a pre-Christmas release. Please watch this space for official news, and more details on the story behind all this, insofar as they can be revealved without compromising my sources."

taken from miles-beyond.

I saw someone selling a sealed promo copy of the set for $40 at an NYC flea market (the one on 6th Ave. and ~16th Street or so) a couple weeks back. Maybe it's still there?

the six discs are all available on SLSK, or at least they were a few weeks ago when it was initially delayed.

I was listening to the first disc this afternoon, and was struck at how "conventional" it sounded to me at this point. I really prefer the Pete Cosey bands to most other Miles electric bands at this point, I think. Jason, is there some of this material that stands above the rest, or is it pretty much of a piece, would you say? do you have a single most mind-melting track that I should be sure to check out?

Jon, I'd say that the material is pretty similar from set to set, with some more on than others, and the night with McLaughlin providing a slightly different flavor (but much of that was already on Live/Evil in edited form). Though I love this stuff, listening to a lot back to back can get pretty monotonous. For me, the 1969 live recordings by the lost quintet show much more variation from show to show.

The first disc is probably the weakest.

I'd say it's definitely the stuff with McLaughlin that's the highlight. But I find the music anything but monotonous, and I think there are tremendous differences in the various renditions of the tunes. The forms and pulses are basically similar, but there are worlds in there.

What's the estate's real beef here? Not enough cashola? It's not like this set will sell in the realm of "Kind of Blue" or even "Sketches of Spain."

I don't have an answer to anyone's questions, but I did post a few thoughts on the set here.

I just hope that there's a good reason and not just some dumb "sticker" issue.
Maybe there are questions about the release and sale of promo copies?
We don't know...but it's quite a disservice to fans
if it's something less than a rights issue that involves potential cash to the estate.
Well, the sticker thing was the rumor, anyway, but I'd bet anything there's some money issues at the bottom of this.

I see that it isn't listed on Amazon anymore at all.
