randy newman's Lousiana

it an appropriate time to hear:
randy newman's good old boys
good old boys...

songs of that reflect directly upon the current insensitive and incompetent presidential administration:

Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)
Louisiana 1927

& songs of hope...

Every Man a King
Kingfish

who's gonna be our kingfish?

Aaron Neville performed a moving version of "Louisiana 1927" on a Katrina fundraiser last night.

I saw part of that fundraiser Root. I couldn't help but be very amused by Mike Meyers' stunned response to the rapper--somebody West, never heard of him before--going off script, and eventually off the air after saying "Bush doesn't like black people" (or something like that). Unfortunately the New Orleans jazz band (featuring Wynton and Harry Connick) sounded really bad on my mono tv. I hope it was mixed better for real tv.

Let's say this, what Kayne West said about the racism didn't make it on air for those watching on the West Coast (unless they were watching the live feed that was being aired on CNBC and MSNBC at 5PM PDT). The censors at NBC decided to edit those remarks out before the broadcast at 8PM PDT.

I was surprised that Paxson Communications decided to have this special air on their stations, since Paxson Communications and NBC/Universal is no longer doing business together anymore.

Man, did he ever, RD! Aaron had my wife and me in tears within two bars. Glad to see brother Charles blowin' onstage, too.

I felt that Wynton was in particularly fine form, and as humble as I've ever seen him in such a setting. Harry Connick looked like he'd been through the wringer, and I'm guessing that he had.

Mike Meyers seemed totally blindsided by the ramblings, then hostile remarks of rapper Kayne West. While West's emotions and sentiments are understandable, he certainly wasn't one I would have chosen as my spokesperson. Yeow.

This was a great album, but it had more to do with 50-60s Lose-iana than the present day Louisiana, IMHO.

However, the message still rings clear.

To wit:

Rednecks

By Randy Newman

Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart ass New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too
Well he may be a fool but he's our fool
If they think they're better than him they're wrong
So I went to the park and I took some paper along
And that's where I made this song

We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
We're too dumb to make it in no Northern town
And we're keepin' the niggers down

We got no-necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol' boys from Tennessee
And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb. Come out dumb too
Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin' drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And they're keepin' the niggers down

CHORUS
We're rednecks, rednecks
And we don't know our ass from a hole in the ground
We're rednecks, we're rednecks
And we're keeping the niggers down

Now your northern nigger's a Negro
You see he's got his dignity
Down here we're too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the nigger free

Yes he's free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he's free to be put in a cage on the South-Side of Chicago
And the West-Side
And he's free to be put in a cage in Hough in Cleveland
And he's free to be put in a cage in East St. Louis
And he's free to be put in a cage in Fillmore in San Francisco
And he's free to be put in a cage in Roxbury in Boston
They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around
Keepin' the niggers down

CHORUS
