Coltrane live at the Half Note to be released officially

Oft-bootlegged Coltrane set heads to CD
Fri Sep 9, 2005 11:20 AM ET

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Jazz legend John Coltrane's oft-bootlegged 1965 performances at New York's Half Note will be given their first authorized release next month.

Due October 11 via Impulse!, "One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note" is sourced from the late Coltrane's own master tapes and produced by his son, Ravi.

The material here was recorded at March 26 and May 7, 1965, shows, with Coltrane backed by pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. Of particular note is a nearly 28-minute version of "One Down, Own Up" that has long been said to be one Coltrane's most impressive live improvisations.

The album is another fall boon for jazz collectors, coming a few weeks after the September 27 release of the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane's "At Carnegie Hall." The Blue Note set chronicles a previously unreleased 1957 performance at Carnegie Hall by the two acts, who only worked together for six months.

That's really good news, Pete! And, four tracks on a 2-CD set? There's some stretchin' goin' on here.

New Coltrane Album to Be Released in October
Date: July 22, 2005
Written By: Bridget Wilson

Oct. 11 will be a thrilling day for John Coltrane lover’s when Impulse! releases the two-CD set One Down, One Up: Live at The Half Note. The legendary documentation of Coltrane and his classic quartet was recorded in March and May of 1965, and for the first time is being released after being discovered in the Coltrane family closet. The recordings feature McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. This group, along with Coltrane, played regularly at the New York’s Half Note through the mid-1960s. The quartet used the club’s flexible set times to accommodate Coltrane’s musical suites and far-reaching improvisations. During that time in Coltrane’s career he was known to push his musical boundaries and the evolution of his style is reflected on these recordings.

One Down, One Up: Live at the Half Note features the songs “One Down, One Up," "Afro Blue," "Song of Praise" and "My Favorite Things," plus liner notes by Ashley Kahn. The album also includes an essay by the CD’s producer, Coltrane’s son Ravi.

Here's the cover ...

I'd say this is a little better than the Coltrane-Monk cover, no?

Cheers,

Rob

I'd say. At least, for my tastes.

It loks like a classic 60s Impulse cover.

Indeed! Although with a touch of Bluenote graphics?

RC ~ Back on the scene!

NP /off thread ~ Mal Waldron - "The Quest" ~with Booker and Dolphy ~ first time I've played it in years ~ anyone noticed how much this prefigures Andrew Hill's VERY CLASSIC Bluenote album with Henderson, Dolphy and Dorham? ~ "Point of Departure"?

Burning Dog ~ practice your Sonny Rollins licks...and behave...or no more Dexter before bedtime!

The Coltrane release: Great!
My old cassettes and LP are almost worn out.
Hope that also the fantastic tapes from Birdland 1962 and 63 can be released as well. And the best of all: The Showboat tapes!

That's phenomenal, Doc Martin. If/when we'll get to hear these wonderful sessions remains the question.

Welcome back, Richardo. I've been thinking of you.
