v/a -- Choro: 1906 - 1947
. . .my deck overlooks the neighbors' back yard/brick courtyard above which towered a 100+ year old Tulip Poplar. The tree had been struck twice by lightning in June. . .the old man had to be taken down. Of seven men, the QB alone ascended the tree with carabiner and humble electric saw attached to his waste. He tied intricate, thick hemp knots 'round each myriad limb, large and small, then watched them smart-bomb into a small circle on the ground. It was better than any film I've seen. Before each decision and/or maneuver, he would peer ruminatively up at the dynamics of the tree, negotiating what would fall, how and where. I had made a refreshment of simple syrup, almond liqeur, cheap rum and some zest of lime. Disc two, tracks two and three feature João Pernambuco ("Interrogando" and the sumptuous "Sonho de Magia") and I saw, maybe as an acoustic fingerstylist manqué, everything from McTell to Kottke in the span of four minutes of music from 1929.
