That Alvin and the Chipmunks version of "Old McDonald" has some nice high-pitched "eieio" on it.....and some clucking and stuff that could be Axel Dorner on an off day.....

From Martin, Bogan & the Armstrongs--Barnyard Dance (Rounder LP [only] #2003):

"Barnyard Dance"

[The chord progression is in the "Up a Lazy River" family.]

It was late one night, pale moonlight
All the vegetables had a spree
They put up a sign said the dance is at 9
and all the admissions were free
There were peas and greens
cabbage and beans
Biggest sight you'd ever seen

When old man cucumber
struck up his number
you should've heard the vegetables scream
Well, little turnip top did the backwards flop
Cabbage shook the shimmy
and she could not stop
Little red beet shook his feet
And the watermelon died of the cockeyed heat
Little tomata agitata
shook the shimmy with the sweet potata
Old man garlic dropped dead of the colic
down at the barnyard dance this morning

down at the barnyard dance.

Emo Phillips - Animal Square Dance

Each time I go to the Zoo I get enraged
to see all the innocent animals encaged.
With our lying, and war, and crime, and bombing, and greed,
it's we who should be locked up and the animals freed.

Ohhh...
The Lion and the Lamb
will soon get down and jam.
They'll be doing
the animal square dance.

Ohhh...
The Cobra and the Mongoose
would take off their shoes and cut loose.
They'd be doing
the animal square dance.

Find a beast and doe-see-doe.
Grab that Leopard by the spots.
Bow to your partner and the Rhino.
Goose that Moose and make it hot.

Everyone, drink promenade!

Ohhh...
The Hippo steps on a Lizard,
and out shoots the Lizard's gizzard,
and the Elephant puts the Moose into a noose,
and the Lion kills an Elk,
and the Tiger kills a Gazelle,
and the Tiger kills another Gazelle,
and the Tiger kills another Gazelle,
and the Gazelles finally wise up and kill the Tiger,
and a Bighorn Sheep gives the Gorilla an exploding banana,
and the Moose puts quicksand in the Cat's litter-box,
and the Penguin puts a Chameleon on a piece of white paper for six hours
and drops him into a housing project,
and the Shrews tie a Duck-billed Platypus to a tree and drive a train set down his throat,
and Porpoises say 'Oh, we're safe in this enclosed tank'
and the Electric Eels say 'Wanna bet?',
and the Parrot tells the Monkey that there's no Monkey God
and the Monkey lives a life of despair and finally kills himself by sticking his head into a light socket,
and the Birds pick his bones clean and the people think he's a wind chime.

But, at least for awhile,
they were doing
the animal square dance.

Annie's Lover
Taj Mahal

Annie's lover was a big ol' man, he was a farming man
Never spent much time worrying ‘bout the people
In the big big city

'Cause all he did know ‘bout was the cows and the chickens
And the pigs and the horses and the sheep and the goats
And the ducks, they fly
Sat on the hill side, playing his guitar
Watching the whole thing come down in a harmony

Annie's lover was a big ol' man, he was an African man
He walked a lot and looked around and saw everything
That his eyes could see

'Cause all he did know ‘bout was the cows and the chickens
And the pigs and the horses and the sheep and the goats
And the trees and the waters and the fields and the mountains
And the blue sky and the big clouds
And the dogs they fly
Sat on the hill side, playing his guitar
Watching the whole thing come down in a harmony

Yeah, I mean, they're nothing hugely groundbreaking, but for fun texmex / rockabilly / roots, yes party music, they're one of the better groups and have been around awhile. Billy has great pop music sensibility, and writes great melodies and funny lyrics. SOmetimes the ballads are a bit much. Good choices in covers too. Root, if you dont have 13 years of bad road, definitely seek it out (PM me) its the best thing they have out there, although I've only heard the first few studio ones.

I saw them play in Tucson many times, once for New Years when the entire band, including "Hot Rod" DeMink, were dressed in giant diapers and sucking on pacifiers.

There's a great circle mixer to this one that I do at beginners' dances, neat little sliding-door step in it:

TENNESSEE WIG WALK
(Larry Coleman / Norman Gimbel)

Bonnie Lou - 1954
Also recorded by : Russ Morgan & His Orch.;
The Deighton Family; Dan Zanes.

I’m a bow-legged chicken, I’m a knock kneed hen
Never been so happy since I don’t know when
I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk
Doing the Tennessee wig walk.

Hear a tune on the fiddle and my heart’s aglow
Though I’m broke and weary and my back is sore
I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk
Doing the Tennessee wig walk.

Put your toes together, your knees apart
Bend your back, get ready to start
Flap your elbows just for luck
Then you wiggle and you waddle like a baby duck.

Come and dance with me honey, tap your toes and glide
And we’ll always be together side by side,
I walk with a wiggle and a giggle and a squawk
Doing the Tennessee wig walk

And for those of you who want to practise the dance at home, here's the choreography:

Formation: Double circle of pairs with inside dancer (usually gents) fac-
ing counterclockwise and outside dancer (usually ladies) facing clock-
wise. Raised right hands are joined palm-to-palm at shoulder level. Identi-
cal footwork throughout. All begin with the left foot.

Music: The Tennessee Wig-Walk, Russ Morgan. Decca 9-28846

Prompts: After the pick-up there are 8 beats before the vocal part and
the start of the dance. Prompts for this simple dance are usually given
partly with the music to keep dancers in time and partly as pre-cues.

Intro - - - -, Ready for the Point
1-8 Front - Side -, Cross in 3 -
9-16 Front - Side -, Cross in 3 -
17-24 Around - - -, - - Forward
25-32 To the second dancer, - Ready with left

Description:

1-2 Point left toe forward
3-4 Point left toe to left side
5-8 Dancers exchange sides by sliding sideways nose-to-nose in 3 steps
and changing to a left handhold as they do so. Swing left foot be-
hind right placing weight on it, step to right on right foot, and close
left foot beside right foot (Behind, Side, Close). Pause on the 4th
beat establishing balance. Those facing CCW are now outside.
9-16 Dancers repeat 1-8 using their right foot first and changing hands
again as they change sides back to their original position.
17-24 Dancers 2-hand Star Right exactly once around starting with the
left foot for a left, right, left, brush (barely touch the floor as the
foot is brought forward but do not step on it until the next beat);
right, left, right, brush to end in their original position.
25-28 Dancers release their handhold and walk straight ahead (insides
CCW, outsides CW) continuing the left, right, left, brush foot pat-
tern. On the 4th beat dancers tap fingers or “high five” with the
dancer they are passing in the opposite circle.
29-32 Dancers continue with a right, left, right, brush moving straight
ahead toward the second person in the opposite circle. Upon meet-
ing, they join raised inside hands ready to repeat the dance.

AMG review: "This smashing debut recording by the one of the worst-named bands in Wisconsin history (if not all of rock & roll) is economical at ten songs, but there are no clunkers on board. E-I-E-I-O's Land of Opportunity takes its inspiration from rockabilly and roots rock, but is not confined by the stifling mannerisms of those genres. Vocalist and songwriter Steve Summers' rich melodic voice often comes close to a country-esque yelp, but never gives in to stereotypical nostalgia, even with nearly all of the songs' subject matter somehow relating to travel. Guitarists Rob Harding and Mike Hoffman (who left the band before the recording of That Love Thang) are razor sharp, especially on the breakneck 'Go West Young Man.' "

Fabulous Bingo Brothers
Once we had a donkey,
we kept it in the yard
One day in the winter
it was snowin' hard

Mother said the donkey
must be cold in the yard
Bring him in the kitchen
and let him have a warm

In came the donkey,
'n' bit me father's ear
Took it for a cabbage leaf
and broke the chandelier

Out went the gas
And then it came alight again
Poor father's head
The donkey took a bite again
Mother took a knife and fork
t'stick it in the ass
Stuck it in me father's head
and out went the gas

Ain't you mad you can't get at it?
Mother's sewn me drawers up.

There are eight million recordings of this auld songe, but the red-hot bluegrass kids of Nickel Creek do an absolutely killer version on their first album. Cisco Houston's rich baritone does it justice, too.

THE FOX

The Fox went out on a chilly night
He prayed for the moon to give him light
For he had many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o
He had many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town-o

He ran till he came to the farmers pen
The ducks and the geese were kept therein
He said a couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o
A couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o

He grabbed the great goose by the neck
He threw a duck across his back
And he didn't mind the quack, quack
And the legs all danglin' down-o, down-o, down-o
He didn't mind the quack, quack
And the legs all danglin' down-o

Well the old gray Woman jumped out of bed
Out of the window she popped her head
Cryin' John, John the great goose is gone
The Fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o
John, John the great goose is gone
And the Fox is on the town-o

He ran till he came to his nice warm den
And there were the little ones 8, 9, 10
Sayin' Daddy, Daddy better go back again
It must be a mighty fine town-o, town-o, town-o
Daddy, Daddy go back again
For it must be a mighty fine town-o

The Fox and his Wife, without any strife
They cut up the goose with a fork and a knife
And they never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o
They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones

One of my favorites from Austin, Texas, the late, great group Hickoids:

Farmer Brown and Bessie the Cow
Had a good thing goin' on
She gave him milk
He gave her hay
They were happy everyday
uh huh

Animal Husbandry don't happen in the city
Animal Husbandry don't happen in the city
Animal Husbandry don't happen in the city
No it don't.
