Other Music Scene - NYC

I thought I'd start this thread so we can keep up to date on non-jazz events happening around the city.

I'll start- Ergo is a band that I run, it's an odd mixture of jazz/improv, electronica, rock and other styles and concepts, I feel like it probably doesn't quite fit in the Jazz scene anymore. We're playing a Free show this Saturday (6-9pm) at the 55 Bar, here's what the eminent Steve Smith wrote about it in this weeks Time OUt NY-

"Trombonist Brett Sroka, keyboardist Carl Maguire and drummer Damion Reid are all part of a generation for which Autechre and Sigur Ros are as pressing concerns as Armstrong and Sun Ra. That's certainly evident in the timbral sophistication, spacey contours and slinky grooves of the band's self-released debut CD, "Quality Anatomechanical Music Since 2005", the cause for celebration tonight."

I've met a lot of cool and decicated music fans here at Jazz Corner, so if it's any incentive I'll give you any of you an advance copy of the CD if you come to the gig to get it. Here are the details of it-

WHEN: Saturday, September 17, sets at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm
WHERE: 55 Bar - 55 Christopher St. (Sixth/Seventh Avenue) New York
WHO: Brett Sroka, Carl Maguire, Damion Reid
PRICE: Free

Jon don't you have something to post here?

Hi, Brett -- I listened to Ergo's record last night and liked it a lot. It's quite a change of direction since "Hearsay." Nice. Can't make the gig, of course, but please send my good greets to Damion.

Thanks Gary, yeah it's seems like a lifetime since hearsay, I've changed and grown so much since then, even since you heard us at the inception of the group a few years ago. We were talking about you at rehearsal the other day actually, about what an amazing house and land you have, and that we enjoyed visiting. We're hoping to come up to JSC again in the spring.

the sets should be roughly in the 30-40 minute range, with 15-20 minute breaks after sets 2 and 4 of each evening. Friday is the most popular night so far (I guess due to two Keith sets, one of them being Keith/Toshi?), about 70 people coming as of now.

Steve Smith is doing a pretty big preview piece in the Times which is supposed to run that day, so that night specifically should be pretty jammed, the other two nights maybe not quite so much. if you're definitely coming, you should buy an advance ticket ASAP. if you can make it there by 9:30ish, you'll still get to see the last three acts that night (Ottavi/Workman, Colley/Lescalleet, Keith/Toshi), which should be well worth your $20.

hope to see you there!

Brett -- Cool. I hope youse do make it up here again. Tell Damion (and Carl) hello for me and to get his butt in gear if he wants to get up here before he *needs* those woolen overalls ... :-) Just kidding of course. I know he's a busy guy and am glad for it, that he's getting the calls and ting. We had a hell of a good time last time, though, and I'm looking forward to doing it again sometime.

PS -- There's a story involved with my first listen to Ergo's CD. I was, let us say herbalized maximo, and tired from having worked hard all day, followed by a little session with Roots. Unbeknownst to me, I had the speaker switch box set so that only the main house speakers, downstairs, were turned on. I thought only the music room speakers were on. So anyways, I hit play and I'm hearing lots of sounds but they weren't seeming to jive with the V/U LED on my player. So, I turned it up, and then up again. I'm listening along going, Jeez, these guys have really gotten into some abstract shit right here. Suddenly Bronwyn's yelling at me over the intercom to shut the fucking speakers off right now!!!!!!!!! I'd been blasting the first 30 seconds of your CD at X+ db and what I was hearing was coming through the floor.

Such a patient woman, Bronwyn.

Kaoru Watanabe- KODO
Born in St. Louis, MO in 1975. Grew up in a musical household- father a violinist and mother a harpist in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Began playing flute at 13 and studied with St. Louis Symphony flutist Jan Smith. Graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan where he gained orchestral and jazz group experience. Moved to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music as a jazz flute/ saxophone major and performed and recorded with, among others, Blue Note recording artists Stefon Harris and Jason Moran. Also joined New York based Japanese drumming (taiko) group Soh Daiko and became heavily interested in Japanese music. After graduating, moved to Japan and studied Noh Kan and Edo Matsuri Bayashi styles of fue (bamboo flute) in Tokyo. Entered the two year apprenticeship program for the internationally touring taiko group Kodo and became a performing member in the year 1999. Since joining Kodo, Kaoru has performed and recorded with Kodo in 16 different countries, performing with such luminaries as Zakir Hussein, Aierto Moreira, Giovanni Hildago and Carlos Nunez. He specializes in the various fue, composing and acting as artistic director of Kodo's annual world music festival, Earth Celebration.

Trombonist and composer Jacob Garchik, born in San Francisco, has lived in New York since 1994. An active freelancer, Jacob has performed with Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, and Joe Maneri. He is a regular member of about 20 ensembles, including the Lee Konitz New Nonet, the Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow Sextet, the Judith Berkson Group, the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, the Jamie Begian Big Band, the Ben Gerstein Collective, 4inObjects, the Matt Glassmeyer Marching Band, the Chorus of Seeds, Slavic Soul Party!, the Four Bags, and Justin Mullens & The Delphian Jazz Orchestra. He has performed at the North Sea, Umbria, Montreal, Porto and JVC jazz festivals, at four international conventions of music educators, and in over 15 countries.
Besides playing new music with many of his creative but unknown peers, Jacob has performed with the Mingus Big Band featuring Elvis Costello, Haitian superstars System Band, country wonderboy Billy Gillman, Paul Anka, and the Billy Mintz Two Bass Band. He has worked with composers Joe Maneri and James Tenney, choreographers Yoshiko Chuma and Anita Cheng, and the Theatre of a Two-headed Calf. He has also worked with an astonishing number of New York's "Downtown" Klezmer and Gypsy punk groups including Golem, Frank London's Klezmer Brass All Stars, Metropolitan Klezmer, Isle of Klezbos, Greg Wall's Simcha All-Stars, Aaron Alexander's Midrash Mish Mosh, Judith Berkson's East River Orchestra, German Goldenshteyn, Michael Alpert, Slavic Soul Party, Eugene Hutz and Gogol Bordello.
He has recorded for Pirhana, Omnitone, Fresh Sound New Talent, NCM East, and Palmetto.

CAVE was established in 1996 by Shige Moriya as a space for local artists to live, create and present their work. Openings often featured performance and music. During our past nine years in Williamsburg, we have continued our mission to establish an environment that attracts, provokes, and supports exchange, generative confrontation, and collaboration among artists and audiences from diverse cultures and artistic backgrounds and evolved into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Extremely long lead time, but since I've mentioned this to a few people who've seemed interested:

At Merkin Concert Hall, presented by Interpretations (Thomas Buckner’s group).

February 2 - Wandelweiser Composers Ensemble / Gamelan Son of Lion

The Wandelweiser Composers Ensemble is a transnational consortium of composer/performers who share an interest in radically reduced musical materials. Appearing here as a trio comprised of Jürg Frey (clarinet), Radu Malfatti (trombone) and Michael Pisaro (electric guitar), the ensemble will perform Three Backgrounds, a simultaneous presentation of three pieces, one by each member.

Founded in 1976, New York-based collective Gamelan Son of Lion specializes in contemporary pieces written for the instruments of the Javanese gamelan. The ensemble has premiered more than a hundred pieces since its inception. Tonight's all-premiere program will feature works by composer/members Barbara Benary, Laura Liben, Jody Kruskal, Lisa Karrer, and David J. Simons.

ISSUE PROJECT ROOM
400 Carroll Street
(between Bond & Nevins)
on the Gowanus Canal
www.issueprojectroom.org

charlotte hug, viola & electronics
jane rigler, flute & electronics

These two ground-breaking musicians join forces for the first time in New York City. Charlotte Hug’s music is textual and almost physical, as she combines the visual arts, dance and installations with her music. She will be in New York for a brief time during her US tour. Charlotte writes: “My work with electronics has a strong influence on the way I play my instrument. I am intrigued by the potential of an extended range of sounds and playing techniques. With my softbow technique, for instance, I have been able to produce between four and eight voices without the help of electronics. Wetting the bow with the water produces a whole other sonic spectrum, what I call my “wetbow” technique, while by twisting a bow’s hairs to create the “twistbow” I can elicit sounds that are virtually identical to those produced electronically.” Jane uses her flute and voice to combine ancient non-Western traditions with her own unique sounds. Now, also using electronics, Jane’s music creates haunting soundscapes that implore the audience to imagine stories in real time.

The December schedule for the Stone has just been posted, and it's kind of mind-boggling -- after an introductory stretch of Zorn improv nights, there's a week of Makigami Koichi, a week of Keiji Haino and a week of Otomo Yoshihide. Some of the combinations look pretty craptacular, but many of them -- particularly Otomo's late stretch with Margarida Garcia, Tim Barnes, Sean Meehan et all -- look pretty amazing. And I can't think of much that would keep me away from that Makigami/Shelley Hirsch duo night...

Greetings Zine w/ Jones Street Boys, Edwin Torres, Marina Rosenfeld, Blaise Siwula, John Clair, Julian Poirier $8 inc. CD

Greetings Aural Magazine #8

Saturday, February 4th at 8pm Greetings Magazine continues its gentle guerilla attack on the written word by holding the next in its aural magazine series at the Bowery Poetry Club. Scheduled to perform are the rootsy-folksy-bluesey-grassy Jones Street Boys, the improvising turntablist Marina Rosenfeld w/ the fabomundo Edwin Torres, and the coherent and still free saxophonist Blaise Siwula. For poets there’s the sparse eloquence of John Clair and the inside-out lines of Julian Poirier. In the spirit of experimentation and collaboration, musicians and poets will combine for performances. As always we invite any and all to listen, enjoy, and submit for our next event (to be held in spring 2006).

Greetings Magazine, published out of Brooklyn for the past five years, emphasizes the oral and collaborative nature of the poem by shifting from the mindset of a magazine that publishes copy and occasionally has readings, to the mindset of a reading series that secondarily documents readings with CD recordings and printed pages. The magazine is the event and the event is the magazine (this time issue #8). All of which sounds as academic and dry as poetry readings themselves can sometimes be. With that said, we do the best we can to have an evening where you feel just as comfortable laughing at what you don’t care for as you do hollering for what you want more of. We aim to make it fun. We also aim to make it feel relaxed enough for newcomers to meet and mingle with the poets, musicians, editors, etc.

As always, patrons of the show on the 4th will receive a complimentary CD and magazine from the previous event at the BPC, featuring the music and words of James Hoff, Steve Dalachinsky, Val Geffner, Eddie Berrigan, Rule of Thumb, John Coletti and more. The 4th’s event will itself be recorded and available at the next event in the series scheduled for the spring of 2006 at the Bowery Poetry Club, which itself will be recorded. And so on and so on. Admission will be $8.
