Jonathan and Darlene Edwards

holy crap--what a funny spoof team they were! I've been listening to a 'best of' of this duo (actually pianist/arranger Paul Weston and vocalist Jo Stafford). As their alter egos, they released several albums in the late 50s and maybe into the '60s where they absolutely destroyed standards with out of tune singing, piano licks that faded out halfway through because the artist got lost, and tempos that were all over the map.

It's very Victor Borge--that kind of musical humor that requires real talent in order to sound terrible.

Any fans here?

I love 'em.

The cut that just kills me is "Stayin' Alive."

I'll put one of their discs in the mix when we have folks over, maybe in between Joe Pas and George Shearing.

The reaction is always the same - "What the hell is that?"

I just listened to Rita Coolidge singing Leon Russell's "Superstar" on the Joe Cocker live set Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Her pitch is, er, not good. She sounds like she's channeling Darlene!
