Comfort Music

There is a comfort zone of music for me and it doesn't always include Jazz.

Sometimes I listen to 60s rock, sometimes I listen to Funk and other times I dig the Blues.

Where is your music comfort zone?

Somewhere between a Rock and a Jazz place...?

Comfort music is the same as comfort food, right?

Depends really.

Comfort from what?

Either way, my top five "comfort albums" in no particular order:

The Sickness - Disturbed

You're The One - Paul Fucking Simon!!

Themes - Vangelis

Root Doctor would most definitely disapprove. So what? Fuck Root Doctor!!!

The Coconut Telegraph - Jimmy Buffett

Root Doctor just had a heart attack...............

The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails

I'm surprised to see this on your list. Good album, though. I saw these guys in concert with Stone Temple Pilots and Godsmack, back when "The Sickness" was a relatively new album. Crappy sound, but they had a lot of energy and played well. I've been listening to their second album a lot lately.

Vangelis, Paul Simon, and schwag-era Buffett? You'll end up voting for Dennis Kucinich if you keep listening to that stuff, Scott.

Classical and flamenco guitar records by Liona Boyd and Jesse Cook, or Rafael Mendez's trumpet soothe the nasties for me. I usually lie on my back on the floor when I listen to them.

Jazz is for my every day listening pleasure. I don't want to fall asleep when I listen to it.

I wasn't associating comfort with sleep but with familiarity. There are too many kinds of jazz and too many ways of playing it for me to generalize in that way, though I've fallen asleep nuff times with "Waltz For Debby" on low volume. There's a whole huge pile of jazz records I'm familiar with as my favorite jeans. I can ease right into them while doing other things or I can ease right in with full concentration and have excellent results, either way.

Sorry Gary, I actually meant restful relaxation, not sleep. OOPS.
Non-music procedures are best for inducing sleep.

A splash of swampy funk, a bit of blues-infused rock, a latin or african rhythm, a grimy dusty beat, or a Bjorkish bit of fun Euro production comforts me to the core nearly to the level jazz does. My comfort zone is eclectic.

I'm pretty comfortable with any organized sound as long as it isn't too loud. I know that you're supposed to crank up, say, the heavy metal. But I even listen to that stuff at a medium volume. I can better appreciate it at a level where the "ugly" factor of the music (screaming vocals, thrashing guitars) isn't heightened by loud. I need to take the edge off.

I do like to listen to my country music loud especially if I'm driving and especially if the song is an asskicker. But even then, my idea of loud is relatively tame.

Yeah, it's funny.

Of all the new stuff out there, this is the one band who caught my ear. Haven't heard Believe. How would you rate it?

Well, the Buffett is a homesick Florida boy thing. It accompanies those mental trips back down to the Gulf coast.

And the Paul Simon kicks ass. I've loved his music since his wicked left hand turn into polyrhythmic Brazillian flavored music. Rhythm Of The Saints is a phenomenal album as well.

Peaceful as a Hurricane, baby!!!

Oh, and besides, if you recall correctly last year, I SAID I was going to vote for Kucinich. I just never made it to the ballot box.

No!!

I like it where I am now.

It's..................................peaceful.......................................serene....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the subtle strains of Vangelis' synth flowing through the air..................flowing though my body. All life begins with a single vibration, says the Greek God of Music.

Yes.....................

to John Tessssssshhhhh ...

to the point where your mind liquifies and runs out of your nose ...

I'm a little confused as to what this thread is about, which probably isn't surprising. "Comfort music" suggests to me the music one would listen to when they want to be soothed, not challenged.

However, Goodspeak's definition of "comfort zone" seems to be the entire range of music one feels comfortable listening to under any circumstances. Yet there's a difference between yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater and yelling "Fire!" in the Grand Canyon, so I think the setting has to be considered.

I'm willing to give just about anything a chance in privacy, where I can turn it down or shut it off if it really annoys me. If I have company, I usually am more considerate of their comfort zone, unless I want to get rid of them quickly. In a crowded public setting, certain music can even incite a riot, as the Stones proved at Altamont.

Since JT was one of my early favorite bands, it's comforting to pull out their old stuff from time to time.

Maybe 3.5 stars. It's not as gritty as what I've heard of the first one, but I still enjoy it a lot. Lots of religious overtones in the lyrics. I seem to remember hearing the lead singer was bitter about his upbringing or something like that. He definitely sounds pissed/alienated.

I only have the DVD-Audio version. Doesn't have the best surround mix, but I like to crank it up and get it going through all the speakers in my setup.
