Meetinghouse NYC

Piano Conversations at the Meetinghouse
with Michael Wolff

The Meetinghouse at Friends Seminary, NYC

Friday, October 7, 2005

Guest Steve Wilson, Saxophones

“Adept in almost any setting, Wilson has the rare ability to say more with less, and to let the space between each note breathe and resonate.” (San Diego Tribune) It is these qualities that have earned STEVE WILSON the enviable position of being on the bandstand, and in the studio with the greatest names in jazz. Wilson has been documented on over 100 recordings with the likes of Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves, O.T.B., James Williams, and Mulgrew Miller. Wilson has seven recordings under his own name. He currently tours with his two ensembles, “Generations” and The Steve Wilson Quartet. He was the featured instrumental soloist at the school's annual "Jazz Night" two years ago. Steve spent a day with Friend's students rehearsing and talking about music and gave a truly memorable performance along with them.

Guests Jules Feiffer, Cartoon Artist;

Orlando “Orly” Hernandez, Tap Dancer

Jules Feiffer, live action drawing with Michael Wolff at the piano and Friends Seminary’s own stupendous tap sensation Orlando Hernandez (10th grade) in a collective improvisation.

Feiffer’s Pulitzer-winning comic strip has been influencing and entertaining readers for decades. His internationally syndicated cartoon ran for 42 years in the Village Voice, weaving the social, political, and personal into a perceptive, challenging, often hilarious mix. His sensibility permeates a wide range of creative work: from his Obie Award-winning play Little Murders (a prophetic vision of random urban violence), to his screenplay for Carnal Knowledge (a controversial examination of the sex wars), to his Oscar-winning anti-military short subject animation, Munro.

This entire series is to benefit the Friends Shelter run by the 15th Street Quaker Meeting. The Shelter houses anywhere from 30 -50 homeless each and every night of the week. It is run entirely by volunteers from the 15th St. Quaker Meeting. and subsists entirely upon donations from individuals and fund raising concerts such as these.
