“Black Workers Pub” at Cecil’s Canceled!
Brothers and Sisters, to my great dismay, I have to announce the cancellation of the “Black Workers Pub” at Cecil’s for the rest of the season. For three years the “Black Workers Pub” series has not only been a labor of love, but also a political responsibility.
Many of you know that because of the political work, I was fired by
Verizon and have been out of work since September, 2003. Although facing incredible economic hardship, I soldiered on in full anticipation of winning my arbitration, which has been taking place since May. It took a year and a-half for my case to come up and although a number of sessions had been cancelled, (as Verizon tried to stretch me out) I fully expected to be “back on the clock” by September.
A fortuitous and devastating turn for the worse occurred at my last hearing on Wednesday. The arbitrator was forced to step down, and the case may have to begin from scratch again. Economically I cannot hold out any longer and am now faced with the task of finding another job, while the uncertainty of my case is resolved. For two years I’ve looked back in anticipation of returning to work soon and giving my life some “normalcy.” Now, I have to look forward in a frenzied attempt to “survive.” Consequently, the time spent and “money lost” on the BWP will temporarily have to be shelved. As we say, it will be “one step backwards in order to take two steps forward.
To all the musicians that were booked on our program for this season, and to all of our supporters that looked forward to our programs, of course I have much regret.
