Name My Kid
Carm's pregnant. It's either good news or bad news from your perspective. Maybe fatherhood will chill me out. Or maybe there'll just be another wiley Monte Smith on the block!
Anyway, I need some names. Don't know if the baby's a boy or a girl, and we're not going to know until birth. So lay 'em on me, names of both genders. First person to suggest Douchebaggio--or Battario for that matter--gets a smack.

Fatherhood?
Marriage chilled yer ass out and I told you it would, TOO ;-)
Congrats, Dad-to-be!
BTW...just a word of sage advice on this one: Better check with your wife on names...trust me.

Thanks Goody...and I will check with my wife. But by the way, I am now referring to the wife as "my baby's momma."

Congratulations! How about some jazz names (along with "Smith"):
For a boy: Willie "The Lion," Jimmy
For a girl: Bessie, Keely
Of course, there's Nabobby or Nabobbie.

Monte,
You name your kid what you think fits.
Then watch as he/she just melts your heart.
Kids are great ;-)

Thanks, and keep 'em coming. I really need help brainstorming. My wife thinks I am lazy just because she's already plowed thru like three baby name books.
I've often thought about naming my kids after commercial products so that I can solicit corporate sponsorship to defray the costs of bringing them up. Thus for boys my favorite is STP; as for girls: Penzoila, Nabisca, Saltina or Palmolivia.

Nah, I'm just kidding, Goody. This is a blessing for Carm and I.
Joe: I will charitably assume that you suggest I name a son after the conquerer of Everest. Well, your suggestion beats Norgay, I suppose.

On both sides of my family, the tradition is to give children their paternal grandfather's name, as their second name, if it's a boy and their grandmother's name as their second name if it's a girl.
I ran into a problem, because both my children are girls. They couldn't both have the same middle name. So, I gave my oldest daughter, Robin, "Kari" [my mother's name] as her middle name. My other daughter, Erin's middle name also honours her grandmother. Mother travelled in the Far East extensively, before she married. She felt an affinity for Far Eastern culture and collected jade, so Erin's middle name is "Jade".
Their first names were given to them when I saw their faces for the first time. I wanted to give them names that suited them. Like Carm, I bought several name books.
I had several names picked out, for both the girls.
I forgot all about them when I saw both of the girls for the first time. Robin was dark and delicate and fragile and looked like her name. Erin was blonde, blue-eyed and looked like her name. Both names just came to me.
I'm not usually so esoteric, but that was what happened.
A lot different than when I was born. My father, along with the fathers of nine of the baby girls born in the same hospital, was in the Princess Patricia Light Infantry. We were all registered as "Patricia", by our fathers, while our mothers were still in the hospital. Our mothers were not pleased.

I don't know the first thing about first names, but if you come up with one I'll give him/her a middle name that'll ring for the ages. 6 out of 7 babies agree(of course I've only come up with the middle name 7 times).
In addition Monte, I was duly impressed that you did not refer to your wife in that wonderful internet vernacular, "preggers".

For a boy, Adam. Or Al.
Or name him after your cowboy grandfather!
For a girl, I dunno. All girl first-name ideas left my mind forever when we discovered Liam was a boy.
In any case, what seems so important before the child is born ceases to have any importance afterward: no matter what name is chosen, it is no longer a name but the baby, and therefore you love it.
In any case, congratulations! In eight or nine months, though, the liberals on Jazz Corner will be seeing a lot less of their favorite target... but lots of baby pictures. ;-)
A philosophical question: why don't you want to know the sex until birth? Lots of people make that choice, but I've never really understood it.

Equally surprised that noone has suggested:

And it has endorsement possibilities, too.

I can recommend my daughter's name, Hannah, which means "grace," is very pretty (like her), and is a palindrome to boot.
Some others:
Carla
Simon
Kelly
Anastasia
Colin
Philip

Depending on your desire for proclaiming individuality, the following may be a guide of names to choose or names to avoid:
Most popular boy and girl names in NYC, 1997, by race
PS: While Chang is the world's most common surname, Smith is the most common surname in the United States.

A Toyota! Race fast, safe car. A Toyota.
A slut nixes sex in Tulsa.
Al lets Della call Ed Stella.
Cigar? Toss it in a can, it is so tragic.
Do geese see god?
Drat Saddam, a mad dastard!
Lisa Bonet ate no basil.
Plan no damn Madonna LP.

For a boy: Will
For a girl: Jada Pinkett
All kidding aside, congratulations Monte! Our baby girl is 13 months old, and it's been the biggest blessing of our life. I recommend reading the book "Transition to Parenthood." It's been very worthwhile for us -- it can help ease the transition, which as happy as it is, can be very difficult as priorities change.

I can only answer that for myself:
It's the surprise -- we were POSITIVE that it was a boy. And when Samantha came out, it was such a beautiful surprise.
I always liked the idea of not knowing. Keeps some of the fun in it!

My philosophical answer: She Who Must Be Obeyed wishes it so.
But on this topic, there is this guy Todd in my office who says that "anyone who determines the sex of their child prematurely thru technological means has no poetry in his/her soul." To which I retort that I have two frigging shelves of poetry in my home office so I'm not worried.

If you are naming a kid, it must be devil spawn.
On the other hand, if your wife is having a baby, that is great.
Try something ethnic yet subtle like Omar.
