Blue Note Poll

Vote for your favorite classic Blue Note!

I have tried to include something for everyone, but the poll reflects my own personal preferences.

I went with the Taylor, but the Dolphy was beckoning also.

I'd have gone with Morgan's Search for the New Land over Sidewinder, personally. And just one disk apiece from Blakey and Silver?

I went with Shorter, just b/c that seems to be the disk which, of the above selections, finds its way into the player the most. But several of my fave BNs aren't listed, so...

I also gave the Dolphy a long, hard look. Ditto for the Kenny Dorham.

Fair enough too - I just wanted a broad mix of BNs and I stuck with one album per artist. Yeah, The Sidewinder is a little obvious but

Its probably a dumb poll really but it was fun to do.

I had to go for Point of Departure. OTL would be a close second or maybe even equal first.

Tanager: which are the favorite BNs of yours not listed?

POD is doing far better than I expected at this stage.

A couple of ones to which I return a lot are:

The aforementioned Lee Morgan disk.

Kenny Dorham - Afro-Cuban
Kenny Dorham - Whistle Stop
Art Blakey Quintet - A Night at Birdland, vol. 1
Wayne Shorter - Juju
Horace Silver - Six Pieces of Silver
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else

But really, there are just sooo many good ones.

That's quite a kick-ass list of recordings. I enjoy each and every one.

Had to go with the Monk release. Still hits me hard, hopefully always will too. Probably OUT TO LUNCH next. Very hard to choose, all of them are fantastic.

I picked The Real McCoy, and I demand a second vote so I can pick Song for My Father. In fact, I demand several more votes, choices TBD.

At first glance, I would have included Joe Henderson, Inner Urge instead of Page One and Tony Williams, Life Time (the album, not the group) instead of Spring, and I would have added Bobby Hutcherson, Dialogue.

Nice poll, though!

I almost chose JuJu over Speak No Evil. I love hearing Shorter with Trane's rhythm section.

Something Else is a definite oversight.

Please put it in if you can Mone?

I am interested to hear about any Blue Note recordings others have heard as I have a limited choice when walking into a shop in Canberra or Sydney. I have a few but I imagine there are folks here with hundreds. The RVGs are easy enough to get and there are some Connoisseur around. However, they are much more expensive. Which Connoisseur's are essential purchases and do they sound better than RVGs?

The only Mosaic Box I have is Sam Rivers. I have wanted to find albums by Tina Brooks but have never seen a CD of his in the shops here.

Well, this asked for favorite, rather than a critical judgment, so it was easy: Song For My Father, as it's the one I've known the longest and have the closest attachment to.

I only know Soul Station, but agree I overlooked him.

Sonny Rollins Village Vanguard recordings should be there too.

Minor Move

whatever, I could type album titles all day. I voted for Sidewinder, but maybe I shoulda voted for Unity. I applaud this noble attempt, anyway. No point in cavilling about what got left off--that it was done at all is commendable.

There are a couple of Jackie McClean disks in the Connoisseur series you should grab - I only have one of them, Destination...Out!, to which I was just listening yesterday, but it's *definitely* a must have.

There are also a couple (or at least one) Tina Brooks disks in the Connoisseur series - I've seen Minor Move around here in a couple of stores, but I've yet to pick it up, so I can't comment on its worth - but it gets a good review at AMG.

Yeah, same here.

Just while we're talking, I assume we're talking "classic" BNs, so we're not including folks like Lovano et al.?

I think a lot of people could type in great sessions all day. But a poll w/o Soul Station or Hank's first quartet date for example seems kind of odd. Especially when Spring is on the list. I like Spring but would never even consider it to be even in the top 50.
And why no representation of the trad dates?

Other possible candidates:

Dexter Gordon, Go
Jimmy Smith (something)
Freddie Hubbard, Hub-Tones? Ready for Freddie?
Don Cherry, Complete Communion

I guess Clifford Brown can't be snuck in there.

Hey I voted for sring. But admittedly I did more of a "critical judgement" than a "favorite" thingy.

Because this is the period I am most interested in and I have never even seen a Blue Note "trad date." I don't know if I have read much about Blue Note "trad dates" on JC. However, if you would care to enlighten me, which are the great ones?

Soul Station is a great album, but of all of my BNs it is probably my least played, with the exception of Moanin' which also has good moments but is a bit overrated in my opinion.

I like ROLL CALL as much as SOUL STATION. Back to back in the player gives one a nice dose of Hank.

Quick question. Is Perrin's receiver too big, or is it that Rossiter's head is too small? SOMETHING is definitely going on there!

Great trad dates on Blue Note? There are quite a few.
But I guess guys like Sidney Bechet, Art Hodes, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Edmond Hall, James P. Johnson and others don't hold much interest here so there really was no need to include them.

Shrugs, I'm curious--if the time frame really begins with the 1940s, as JBW said, which specific Bechet album on Blue Note would you nominate? The Mosaic box doesn't count!

For Bechet, I would nominate Sidney Bechet's Blue Note Jazzmen.
That includes the first incredible encounter with Wild Bill Davison.

Just curious: Of all the great Blakey albums, "At the Jazz Corner of the World" seems like a strange pick. It is certainly a nice album with a unique lineup but...

When was Blue Note started? Hint:It wasn't far off from 1940.
I second John L's choice and will ante up Art Hodes' Hot Five. As well as the Port Of Harlem Jazzmen sessions and there are plenty more!
Albert Ammons - Meade ``Lux'' Lewis Duo
Edmond Hall Celeste Quartet
Edmond Hall's Blue Note Jazzmen
James P. Johnson's Blue Note Jazzmen
Art Hodes' Chicagoans
Art Hodes' Back Room Boys.............................................
