New Yoshi's in SF

SAN FRANCISCO
Jazz club breaks ground
- Daniel King, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 12, 2005
Yoshi's jazz club of Oakland broke ground Tuesday at the site of its second home, a planned 420-seat nightclub and a Japanese restaurant at the long-vacant corner of Fillmore and Eddy streets in San Francisco.

The new club will open in 18 months, owners said, and will complement, not replace, the current Yoshi's, at 510 Embarcadero West in Oakland.

"This is about bringing the heart and soul of San Francisco back to the forefront," Mayor Gavin Newsom said alongside former Mayor Willie Brown, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and hundreds of jazz musicians and supporters before a Buddhist monk performed a ground-purification ritual.

The new 12-story building will also include a French-Caribbean restaurant, a jazz heritage center, 80 condominiums and an underground parking garage, all meant to boost the neighborhood's commerce and re-energize its jazz scene, in a once-thriving mecca of jazz in the 1950s and '60s.

The $68 million building complex, called the Fillmore Heritage Center, is funded in part by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency.

Does this mean there will be a SF & Oakland Yoshi's?

Yes, there will be a SF and Oakland Yoshi's. This is according to the San Francisco Chronicle

If I am still doing the concert calendar when the SF Yoshi's opens up, I'll have to put down which Yoshi's it is.

Keystone Corner was in North Beach, different part of town. But San Francisco's such a geographically small city, it's probably only about three miles or so.

Sorry for not responding sooner, computer problems..... I got a new hard drive.... now I'm searching for all the file that aren't here. Jazz Corner is a fine way to procrastinate...

Yes, 2 Yoshi's, not sure of the complete booking philosophy yet, but that will take shape as we approach mid 2007 for the grand opening.

The new club will be slightly larger than the Oakland location, but not enough to make much of a difference.....

I expect my gray hair to grow in much faster with teh second club.

Peter: how is it coming? The owner of Santa Rosa's Last Record Store and I are hoping to get down there for opening week -- is there one scheduled yet?

Just wondering as well. Mind you, I'll probably not be able to make it but just curious all the same.

Right now, we're looking at September or October, but there have been some 'issues' so it is not set in stone yet. Therefore, no opening act booked....
More details soon!

Thanks, Peter! Keep us posted.

From the North Bay, a trip down #101 to The City sounds a lot less stressful than braving those East Bay freeways! (Did a gig in Dublin this week, and was reminded again.)
