I saw a report that said that the anti-war message presented by the Smurf cartoon is very effective. I saw it and it is very disturbing, with the little, crying Baby Smurf being the only one left, sitting in the middle of the smoking devastation with all the bodies of the other Smurfs surrounding him.
Whatever it takes.

The family who owns the copyright to the Smurfs have been particularly lenient. I was watching "Adult Swim" on the Cartoon Network last week and saw an episode of the Smurfs based on the movie "Seven," with a serial killer going through the village and offing Smurfs. As I recall, Daisy's severed head ended up in a basket. There was one hilarious scene where one of the Smurfs started to realize that the serial killer was going after the Seven Deadly Sins. He says, "What's next? What's next? Lust! It's lust!" (pause) "Oh no! Chronic Masturbator Smurf!"

None of this would have happened if Gargamel had been faced down early in his rise. The signs were all there. But the smurfy appeasers had to have their "peace in our time." Disgraceful. And all the more disgraceful for being entirely predictable.
