Anita O'Day - Anita O'Day Sings the Winners
Wow! Ms. O'Day can sing! Although I still hold firm that Ella was the greatest vocalist ever ( ) I have to say that Anita is a very close runner up. This CD is great, to put it simply. Every selection swings and is the album is just plain hot.
Grade: A+
(this is a CD from the library, BTW, but I liked it so much I could not resist writing a review.)

It's very nice to see you getting excited about the music. If I may, based on reading your likes at this point, I would highly recommend the CD "Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown" on Verve. I believe the title is simply "Sarah Vaughan" in any case here is a link at amazon which gives you an idea

If you like Ella and Anita O'Day, I'm fairly sure you'll like Sarah. And you should also really enjoy the wonderful Clifford Brown.

Hey Theo, stonemonkts, is *RIGHT*. You must get that Sarah Vaughn. And, in re previous recommendations, you can get the Sarah and several Anitas (maybe even the one you borrowed) from the BMG record club. You oughtta sign up now. Don't forget though, do a search for the artists' name. If you just click on "jazz" not everything shows up.

I ADORE Anita, Theophilus! "Sings The Winners" is a fine album, with my favorite vocal version of 'Body And Soul.' I also love the all-scat "Hershey Bar" and "Waiter Peel Me A Grape", both of which are bonus tracks that can also be found on her outstanding albums with Jimmy Giuffre (Cool Heat) and Cal Tjader (Time For 2).
For her earlier work, I highly recommend "Let Me Off Uptown," which has her work with the Gene Krupa, including some great duets with Roy Eldridge that were considered racially risque back then and a drop-dead beautiful slow scat number titled "That's What You Think," one of my favorite jazz vocals. Also, check out her great compilation 'And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," which includes her work with Nat King Cole, Stan Kenton and other groups.
The Verve Jazz Masters compilation is outstanding, with my favorite versions of That Old Feeling and Ten Cents a Dance.
And I can also highly recommend her first album as leader, "Anita," as well as "Anita O'Day swings Cole Porter with Billy May" (good bonus tracks, too, with Bill Holman, Giuffre, Jimmy Rowles, etc.).

Also, buy the DVD of Jazz on a Summer Day. You should have this for a thousand reasons, not the least of which is the sight of Anita all gussied up in feathery hat and white gloves singing "Tea for Two."
Last, get the two other vocal recordings with Clifford on them, Helen Merrill, and Dinah [Washington] Jams!

Yes, but as I believe I have told Tanager before I have neither CD burner nor MP3 player, so I am reluctant to use EMusic because I would have to sit in the computer room all day to listen to my selections, and I cannot do that as there are a lot of other ppl in my house who use the computer.
