Jazz Plaque in Seattle
A permanent plaque being unveiled tomorrow at the northwest corner of 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street, at the eastern edge of the Chinatown International District and just north of Beacon Hill, will pay homage to the roots of jazz music in Seattle.
Mayor Greg Nickels will unveil the plaque at a public dedication ceremony at 3 p.m.
A spokeswoman in Seattle's Office of Economic Development said the site was selected because the area was home to a number of popular jazz venues from the 1920s to the 1960s. It also was where a number of Seattle's most notable jazz musicians, many of whom went on to become world-recognized performers and recording artists, honed their craft.
The plaque is a two-sided steel-plated sign attached to a metal pole near a bus stop on South Jackson Street. On the plaque are engraved photos and a walking map of the area.
