Your Favorite Blues Artist

Which do you choose?

[And, yes...I am certain I left off your favorite, but look at the last choice in the poll, OK?]

Favourites? I checked "other" because the three who really touch me are Nina Simone, Odetta and, a surprising choice I guess, Jonny Lang, whom I first heard when he recorded with The Big Bang, as a very young teenager. He has an old soul.

That's true, Pete. However when either Odetta, or the late Nina Simone did do blues, and both have collections on records of blues material, they are both electrifying, IMO.
I saw Odetta a couple of years ago in Sacramento and she sang several blues tunes. She's still got it.
Jonny Lang, on the other hand, has always been a blues man/boy. I'm not sure what he has been doing for the last year or so, but I am very impressed by his understanding of the spirit of blues, considering how young he was when he burst on the scene when he was about twelve or thirteen.
There's a very short piece of film, featuring Lang, in Blues Brothers 2000. I like his style.

What I love about Sonny Boy II is that for me he has the most swing of all the delta-Chicago guys.

I guess it's always been Johnny Winter. For me, I take the blues in small bites and that works for me. Too much and I start thinking about all the other chords I'd like to hear. But a good guitarist is a good guitarist, and Johnny has been that and more.

I also have a lot of appreciation for Stevie Ray Vaughn.

No vote here, and probably along a similar line to Patricia, some of my absolute favorite blues performances [both live and recorded] come from jazz musicians who can really play the blues.

Gary Bartz, for instance, is absolutely KILLER when he plays the blues!!

Of that list, I'd have to say Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Buddy Guy (not choosing) but most of my favorites aren't on there, 'cause it's severely lacking delta and Memphis blues artists. Not to mention Texas blues artists.

Lightnin' was my original role model of "cool" and still is. I got to hear him live at age 15, one night when he was really on. That was that, forever.
