Great (favorite) recorded LIVE rock or r&b vocals.

Van Morrison singing Caravan on The Last Waltz (hearing this today made me think of this thread idea)

Otis Redding singing Try a Little Tenderness at the Monterey Pop Festival

Warren Zevon singing Poor Poor Pitiful Me on his live album (forget the name)

Richard Manuel (and the Band) singing Makes No Difference on the Last Waltz

The whole album. (How long has this been on CD?)

In particular, Aretha's segue/intro after her uptempo "Can't Get No Satisfaction" (leading into "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream"), where she addresses the crowd, "Thank you, thank you, I wonder if you'd believe me if I told you (starts singing) If I lose this dream I don't know what I'm gonna do"

Great thread idea, thelil, but this should be moved to Other Music.

°°°°

James Brown -- "Please, Please, Please, Please", with the capes and the multiple returns to the stage. Don't know what the movie is.

Sam Cooke -- "Bring It On Home To Me", from the Live at The Harlem Square Club, 1963, with a 3 minute intro to a 2'45" song. Defines "soulful".

Probably lip-synched, but it's such a great song I have to mention Toussaint McCall's "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" from the movie "Hairspray".

Joann Osborne's version of "What's Become of The Brokenhearted" from the movie "Standing In The Shadows of Motown".

And Janis' version of "Ball & Chain" from Monterey (or was it Woodstock?).

Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys - particularly "Who Knows," "Machine Gun," and the BEST version of "Foxy Lady" I've ever heard.

Hendrix - Woodstock - "Villanova Junction" is out of this world.

Grateful Dead - One From The Vault - essentially Blues For Allah live, with a kick ass version of "Help On The Way."

It's Danko who sings "It Makes No Difference" on Thre Last Waltz, not Manuel.

Also, Squaredancecallling: I didn't even know there was an "other music " board.

In addition to being a fine writer, Phil Lynott had a set of pipes on him. The live take of "Still in Love With You" is movingly soulful, and he rocks out on the heavier material.

Doc Dave is right. "Live at the Apollo" is the Alpha and Omega.

Others...

Otis singing "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa" on "Live in Europe."
Bonnie Raitt and John Prine dueting on Prine's "Angel from Montgomery."
Neil Young's electric "Powderfinger" on "Rust Never Sleeps."
Gregg Allman's "Statesboro Blues" on "Fillmore East."
Levon Helm's "Don't Do It" on "Rock of Ages."
Elvis Costello's "I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea" on "Live at the El Mocambo."
Richard Thompson's "Calvary Cross."
Sandy Denny on "Ballad of Easy Rider."
Curtis Mayfield with "We're a Winner."
Lowell George's "Fat Man in the Bathtub" on "Waiting for Columbus."
Los Lobos' David Hidalgo with "Bertha."
Joni Mitchell's kind of corny but quite fetching singalong of "The Circle Game" on "Miles of Aisles."
Bryan Ferry's take on Lennon's "Jealous Guy."
Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" on "A Black and White Night."
Bobby Blue Bland's "Farther on Up the Road."
Aaron Nevile's "Tell It Like It Is" from "Neville-Ization."
Graham Parker's "Soul Shoes."
Springsteen's "Prove It All Night" from the Roxy.

(Zevon's live record was "Stand in the Fire." I'd nominate "Bo Diddley's a Gunslinger" from that one.)

With apologies to the Godfather, this one's the best for my money. You can practically smell the sweat coming off of this record.

Great choices from top to bottom.

A JHS friend of mine had everything Otis Redding...would not likely have found him early on otherwise.

One that I'm quite partial to is Aretha Live At The Filmore[West]
The one where she brings Ray Charles out...

Spirit In The Dark baby!

I was re-watching that this weekend. I was never a big Osborne fan, but that is one incredible performance.

Whoa, definitely! Although I'd probably choose the "Pleasant Street/You Keep Me Hangin' On" medley from that glorious set.

Al Anderson's vocals on "Crazy Like a Fox," not to mention his Fats Wallerized turn on Billy Stewart's "Sitting in the Park" from this great disc:
