As I implied in the other thread, there are lots of applicable entries people have made in the following threads:
Recent pop
post-1975 rock music
Left Behind... (this post of mine details a few resources to browse)

Two particular favorites of mine are Modest Mouse and The Dismemberment Plan, though there's lots of folks I'd recommend.

I have seen and even booked Modest Mouse a few times. Can't say I am the biggest fan. Initially I liked MM but grew tired of them quickly. Don't know the other band.

I regularly read all the zines you mentioned but somehow don't come to the same conclusions.

My band has been covering a song by the Decemberists, brought in by our keyboard player. It's the only track I've heard by them, and it shows influences of Dylan and the Beatles among others, FWIW.

Sonic, you might like the lyrics. It's a rather bitter political commentary.

The Decemberists - Sixteen Military Wives

(written by: Colin Meloy)
From the album "Picaresque"

Sixteen military wives
Thirty-two softly focused brightly colored eyes,
Staring at the natural tan
of thirty-two gently clenching wrinkled little hands.

Seventeen company men,
Out of which only twelve will make it back again.
Sergeant sent a letter to five
Military wives, as tears drip down from ten little eyes.

Cheer them on to their rivals...

Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so...
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da

Fifteen celebrity minds,
Leading their fifteen sordid wretched checkered lives.
Will they find the solution in time
Using their fifteen pristine moderate liberal minds?

Eighteen academy chairs
Out of which only seven really even care,
Doling out a garment to five
Celebrity mimds, they're humbly taken by surprise.

Cheer them on to their rivals...

Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so...
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-daa
La de da de da de-dadedade-daaa

Fourteen cannibal kings
Wondering blithely what the dinner bell will bring.
Fifteen celebrity mimds
Served on a leafy bed of sixteen military wives.

Cheer them on to their rivals...

Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so...
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-daa
La de da de da de-dadedade-daa
La de da de da de-dadedade
Da de da de da de-dadedade
Da de da de da de-dadedade-daaa

I know I come off as rather politically concerned on this forum. But I actually don't care for real political bands.

I have mixed feelings about it myself, but it is a catchy tune. I'm not sure how representative it is of the rest of their work, either, though it shows promise.

Can't remember that far back. Was Jeff Buckley still alive? If so, then him.

"Somehow"? Different tastes, perhaps? I've certainly made no conclusions about what you should find worthwhile... nor are you asking that question. My posts have really only been about establishing what listening base you might want to make a decision, not that you're missing out by not enjoying it.

I read them for a reason. But usually to catch up on either non-rock bands or reissues. I hope I am not coming off rudely. Just bitchin'.

I admit some closemindedness here. I have just never been so consistently disappointed. It may be my own fault.

Not bad choices there heresay. Though Flaming Lips are really an 80s band that got popular in the 90s, and their style really reflects that.

I admit to being a closet Radiohead fan. But I am not always in the mood. But having just listened to Can today, I have to say, they all pale in comparisson.

Some Radiohead. Also dig folky fluff like Sheryl Crow. As for hardrock, Disturbed and Alice In Chains was pleasing enough to my ear.

I'm not familiar with many of the bands mentioned here that don't get airplay. I'm sure they are good because their names continually pop up around here, but I just don't seek out hardrock acts anymore.

Bardo Pond.
The New Pornographers
new album isn't bad.
Spoon.
Count me in as a Sigur Ros fan too.
Some Mogwai is pretty good.
The Mars Volta.
I like much of the rock improv of post 1995 King Crimson.

...Oh yeah,
Interpol
Low
Some Wilco. Actually I think their last two were both very good.
My Morning Jacket. Which reminds me I must get hold of the new album.

U.S. Maple? As my intro to the groop I got Long Hair in Three Stages a few months ago, and while it doesn't blow me away, it's "worthwhile." Also: I am liking the Magik Markers a lot--saw em live a li'l while back and have had the Feel the Crayon CDR on in intermittent rotation. Good kids, looking forward to hearing more from them.

I like these guys.

My favorite rock band of the past few years is Sleater-Kinney.

As I mentioned on the WAYLT thread earlier today, I just discovered the Constantines last week when I saw them live and am very impressed. Listening to their "Tournament of Hearts" record right now.

I hear you, but I think their style is pretty original and fun no matter what, and their live shows are increbidly inventive and fun.

I love Radiohead, but I think this is pretty much apples and oranges.

Did you know My Morning Jacket is up for Album of the Year talks at Rolling Stone? They were #6 on a list of 50 best albums of this year (which would make you think they wouldn't win, but who knows...)

Congrats Bo! (if he ever has time to look here)

I love Sigur Ros's new album (hate the case though - I am gonna scratch that fuckin' thing, I know it...)

My Morning Jacket gets a lot of airplay from me right now - thought not every track. 1,2,7,10 get the most - I think Gideon is the only track I find myself skipping (ditch it Bo!) I could have SWORN that "Off the Record" was a cover song - 'cause I found myself singing along to it almost immediately - Bo played me some of the stuff on our way to basketball in the summer and I think that's where I heard it...

Arcade Fire is a fun time as well.

And I am a sucker for these bands as well:

Kings of Leon
Bloc Party
the new NIN album ("Why Do You Get All the Love" is fuckin' great)

And Echoes De Luxe...I like the drummer just fine. :O
