Lindsey Horner - Don't Count on Glory
Thought I'd mention this one--it's a Cadence release, & my impression is that often Cadence's mainstreamier releases get ignored because people associate the label more with the free-jazz end of things. Hope it doesn't happen to this one, a storming little-big-band release with a strong rock'n'roll/fusion element (solo or twinned guitars, the huge rock-out of "Too, Too Blue" with Bobby Previte in the drum chair, Uri Caine turning up to daub some bucolic Fender Rhodes on a few tracks). Plenty of solos from Marty Ehrlich to keep his fans happy, & Allison Miller, Ehrlich's current drummer, is on most of the tracks. My 8-year-old brightened up when I put this one on (since she's usually inured to Daddy's music being lots of kid-unfriendly noise).... she found Horner's version of "Green Chimneys" compulsively danceable...!
It's a big lineup, changing from track to track--here's what I typed in in preparation for a formal review--
Horner, b, bari s, b cl, whistle, tin whistle; Marty Ehrlich, Ben Opie, as; Lou Stellute, ts; Brian Lynch, tpt; Colter Harper, Pete McCann, Eric Susoeff, g; Neal Kirkwood, p; Uri Caine, el p; Allison Miller, d, djembe; Bobby Previte, Dave Throckmorton, Lieven Venken, d; Jeff Berman, Jim DiSpirito, perc.

Horner.
Would love to hear it. If only for his presence with Melford when she could still capture the imagination.

Yes, his work with Melford was excellent. I also caught him with Michael Moore's Jewels & Binoculars--I'm not as enamoured of that project as some JCers are but it was still nice to catch them on the hoof (working out tunes like "Floater" from the then-brand-new "Love & Theft").

Yes, this looks like a good one, Nate. Thanks for drawing attention to it. By the way, I happen to think you probably caught Jewels & Binoculars on an off night. Now, I'm not that fond of their second disc, Floater, either, but the first one, you really should hear. Beautiul solos from Moore, they almost go head-to-head with Dylan's lines for whatever you might want from a melody.

I've been pounding this sucker today in anticipation of seeing a pared-down assemblage of the core participants of this at the Erie Festival tomorrow (Allison Brown: Drums; Neal Kirkwood: Piano; Pete McCann: Guitar & Horner) and am sorely disappointed that a paltry four posters saw fit to weigh in on this; albeit four of the best. WTF!!! This isn't one of Lois's overpriced give-aways that you cheap bastards flock to. This isn't even one of Rusch's can't-hear-the-bass-but-fuck-you-anyway-it's-audiophile-because-I-say-so CIMPs. This is primo shit yet you hobbyists are turning a deaf ear to it in favor of some namby-pamby OJC or Concord garbage. Well fuck you to death. Jump on this or permanently shut the fuck up and go soak in Ken Burns jerkoff hot-tub.

I'll give them a call soon.
I need a new subscription anyway.
Fuck all that Concord sale hype. Everything can be found on vinyl or on the newsgroups.

Hey, someone more passionate about this disc than me! That's good to hear ....
Yeah, it's a sweet disc--I can't fathom why it's not got a lot more press. My copy's on loan to a friend otherwise I'd be spinning it now.... & thanks for the report on the band's live gig in the Live Events forum, too, Hate.

I picked this one up on Nate's rec - my man always has some good recs for me around the end of the year (Hijmans!) - and concur with the above.

Jason--glad you liked it! I always feel a little trepidation in recommending anything with a guitarist to you...... -- If you like Hijmans by the way you might get a kick out of Trio Continuo's Authentic Basics--it's got Hijmans, Jan Willem van der Ham (of Bik Bent Braam & assorted other Dutch ensembles--on bassoon throughout!) & Ernst Glerum: a mix of originals plus some subversive arrangements of Purcell & Mozart.

Late to the party here, but I'd toss my thumbs into the pile on this one too- a great disc w/ some very passionate playing.
Nate, guessing by the format of your players/instruments list that you reviewed this one for Cadence?

Yes, I think the piece ran an issue or two ago. With a typo (my own) but no matter...! Did you ever write it up BTW? You usually tackle a fair number of the CJR/CIMP releases....

Just got a note from Horner himself, who expresses his thanks for the enthusiasm for Dont Count on Glory but wanted to make a correction: Jewels & Binoculars is a collective trio rather than Moore's project.
He also mentioned that the 3rd Jewels & Binoculars disc is being recorded this September, with a special guest--Bill Frisell's guesting on several tracks. Sounds great to me!

When I saw Jewels & Binoculars, Horner made all the announcements.

Good news that a new disc is coming out. So did you have a chance to hear either of their discs Nate (as I've said repeatedly, I prefer the first)?
And I will get to Don't Count on Glory, though not before 2007 as my stipend ran out in June and I'm already in the red with two more years to go.

Nope, it fell through the cracks in my docket, but I've been enjoying it nonetheless. Hey, speaking of CIMP coverage, they've been steadily plugging in old reviews over at the new website. It's been a kick reading some of the press clippings, especially those commenting on the early releases in the catalog. Appears to have been a fair amount of reviewer attrition over the years.
Gokhan, I owe you reply & will have one off directly.

Gokhan--no, haven't heard the CDs by Jewels & Binoculars, just heard them live. But I'm definitely interested in the matchup with Frisell--have kind of lost interest in BF's own work on Elektra/Nonesuch but his sideman appearances tend to be eventful.
Derek--haven't noticed that about the CIMP site--will take a look. The main reason for the decline in the number of reviews I suspect is that after negative reviews about CIMP's sound appeared in various periodicals I think Rusch gave up sending them promo copies. I wish the CJR discs were more widely reviewed, though: the sound-quality is variable (since they are essentially self-produced sessions) but sometimes excellent, as on the Horner or the John Hagen discs (Hagen's disc is ECM-quality). I think the last CJRs to receive widespread notice were the Cecil Taylors & the Noah Rosen disc.

Hmm. I was out for a bike ride last night and found myself by Tower Records, which I hadn't visited for at least a year. I ended up picking up the Horner disc, on impulse.
Having listened to it a couple of times now, I have to say, I like it, it's nice, but it's not grabbing my like I expected it to, based on this thread. It may just be a case of inflated expectations, though, so I'll spin it a few more times and see what clicks!

Rob, your reaction is similar to my initial one; I thought it sounded a bit too fusion-y and I put it aside for a couple months. Then when I decided to go see them I thought I'd get more familiar with the disc and it sounded like the shizznit from note one. I banged away on it for a few days, loving every moment. That's not the first time something like that has happened but it is atypical.
