Absolutely, class of '72. Very cool if you are too!! It would explain how erudite and argumentative your posts are.

Yeah, baby. Class of '88. In the summer of '86, I was living in the dorm next to the one where the basketball players lived. The bad, sad summer of Lenny Bias' death. Still clearly remember that morning, seeing the reporters staked outside, hearing the news from them. Broke my heart. That dumb bastard, Lenny. Best college player I've ever seen.
Sure took a long time to recover, but Gary brought us to the mountain top! And no one sweats through a suit better than he does.

What dorm was that? I lived in Bel Air and I think some of the hoops players were in the same complex; Jim O'Brien, one of Lefty's first big recruits, would come around a bit.
Ever see the feature that CBS has shown "From Tragedy to Triumph"? It's a very good 2 hour telling of how the whole program had progressed from when Cole Field House was built. Of course Lenny was a major focus of the story for obvious reasons. They had some great clips of his. There were some excellent games that I saw there (beating South Carolina when they were ranked close to the top was sweet) but I'm pretty envious of your having been there for Bias, Adrian Branch and Ben Coleman, iirc.
I wasn't sold on Sweaty G when he first got there; I used to call my roomie every year after we'd get knocked out of the tourney and bitch that the team played with no poise in the clutch and that I was gonna die without them ever going to a Final Four. Then came Juan, Lonnie, Blake, Mou, Holden, Wilcox and Drew. I was very glad to be proven wrong.
Stop by the college hoops thread; I'm always holding down the Terp fort.

Most of the time I lived in Talbot Hall, but that summer I was staying in one behind it, and I can't remember the name right now. Garret? I know Lenny was living (and died) in Washington Hall. I used to see him every day, and like everyone else on campus, I'd greet him ('What's up, Lenny!") like I knew him and he'd smile sweetly and nod.
Yeah, those were great years in terms of talent, especially Branch and Bias. Do you remember Herman Veal? Or Keith Gattlin? Even after Lenny's death, there were some great players like Tony Massenburg.

I remembered when they showed news clips (I was watching from Ohio) of Lenny's body being taken out thinking that those were the older dorms (which I'm sure had been redone); when I was there I'm pretty sure the jocks were in the complexes. Everybody liked Lenny, in part because he was a local (Northwestern, iirc); plus I don't think anybody expected him to be nearly as monstrously talented as he turned out to be. Branch was a DeMatha product (my school too) where Lefty had difficulty recruiting usually; the starting guards for Valvano's championship team, Sidney Lowe and Derrick Whittenberg, were DeMatha Stags. Adrian knocked around the NBA a few years; he might've gotten a championship ring with the Lakers.

Of course I remember those guys. Veal was a monster on the boards and I was never sure what to make of that *other* matter. If he did it, well then that was pretty damn bad; but I'm not sure about what the truth was. Those were weirdly pc times and it would've been easy for an innocent person to be railroaded; hell, even today many campus codes pretty much shred the Constitution and Bill of Rights in terms of rights of the accused. Gattlin was an outstanding point guard. Tony Massenburg has been an NBA fixture as was one of my favorite Terps, Walt Williams, who didn't bail on Gary when the *spit* NCAA nuked us for Bob Wade driving a player to class. The Wizard could've easily transferred to another school and achieved a lot more exposure but stuck it out. That was about the only thing that worked out well for Gary when he started coaching the Terps; if he'd have known what the NCAA was gonna drop on him, I doubt that he would've left Ohio State. He had to rebuild the program from the ground up. That's ok; adversity just made the Final Four and Championship years that much sweeter.

Merry Birthday, Captain Hate. Every year that we hang in there is one more piece of the puzzle that is the totality of who we are destined to finally be.
A cake, good libation and those who love you surrounding you. It doesn't get better than that.
Enjoy the day.

Yeah, those dorms were made into nice apartments. (I lived across the hall from a pretty great football player who played in the NFL later on, Ferrell Edmunds.)
You probably remember that a few years after his death, Lenny's younger brother was killed in a gang drive-by shooting (iirc).
And you might remember that when Maryland played Duke after Herman Veal's 'trouble" the Duke fans waved panties in the air when Herman was introduced. That was pretty funny.
I've been amazed at how many good players Gary's turned out.
Anyway, this has been some nice Terp nostalgia. Have a great birthday, and I'll drop in on the college basketball thread.

Happy birthday, Cap'n.
Speaking of the Len Bias case, I read a book about his death years ago that mentioned that Brian Tribble's father was a DC-based musician. I always figured that it had to be TNT Tribble, an excellent R & B bandleader. Does anyone know for certain?

I agree, that was back when the Cameron crazies were pretty inventive; I'll have to ask Tanager if that's when he was going there because he considers today's crazies to be pretty lame.
One more thing about Bias: I post at a Terp bbs and the arguments still go on about the circumstances of his death, primarily was he a regular user at that point or was this something that some hanger-on brought for him to try and, being so cut and ripped, he foolishly thought he could handle anything. Since I was far away from the situation I really couldn't have any insight. But I remember being shocked when I saw his picture on draft day, after the Celtics had taken him, at how out of it he looked, particularly in his eyes. I had never seen that prior to that. Maybe it was from some late-night partying with non-contraband refreshment, but I remember thinking wtf.

I don't think anyone ever found any proof that Len was a regular partier. He did go to this bar in D.C. (where he hung with Brian Tribble) a lot because he was a celeb and women pretty much threw themselves at him, but I never heard any gossip about him being a drug user. He was tested by several NBA teams before the draft (not that that can't be beat, especially in '86). But I saw him nearly every day on campus, and that guy was, as you say, ripped. I think it was as most people came to believe, a pretty isolated but sadly fatal incident. That was back when people free-based their crack.
The only believable gossip about him at that time was that he got paid off to return for his senior year. That year he had a nice new set of duds (including a very sharp long leather coat in winter) and soon enough a sports car (a 280-ZX, irrc). Someone arranged for some 'loans,' perhaps.

Thanks Dupre, the only way I made it through was following my Terps and my usual bandwagon whoring.
Thanks to everybody else for the nice wishes. Btw, that sheepdog on my avatar is prolly pretty close to a dirt nap. He and I got into it on a walk a few weeks ago in which he took a pretty hefty chunk outta my hand (mercifully missing any small bones and arteries). At that point I wanted to ice him but Mrs Hate talked me out of it. Then this weekend he gave me a lesser nip from out of nowhere and Mrs H (he's her dog) is taking him to the vets on Friday to see if he can be tranked up. Failing that, he's toast. I am pretty fond of him but I refuse to put up with a dog that I can't trust.

Sadly, that's true. Our St Bernard developed what the vet told us was a brain tumer that was causing erratic behaviour, sometimes aggressive behaviour and we had to have her put down at thirteen. Considering that she weighed 200 pounds and we had small kids, the risk of keeping her was not worth it. It broke my heart to lose her. Tranking was not an option I wanted to choose. It would have turned her into what could only be described as a St Bernard-shaped rug. Not fair to her.

That's why we're the humane owners. My last dog, a very small Airedale female that we rescued from the pound, really broke my heart. I think Emma was damaged goods when we got her because she was always going through severe intestinal problems. Plus she must've been part of a puppy mill because you could feel ridges in her neck where they had to cut a choker chain off her. Despite all that she was the sweetest dog I ever had and incredibly good natured; and the most well behaved and easiest to train. One day she just stopped eating. She would drink water but no food so she was wasting away to nothing. But even then her spirits were high so we took her again to the vets, who kept saying they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her and wanted to operate on her. As soon as they put her under her heart stopped. It still bothers me that we didn't have her put down with us there; that she spent her last days frightened among strangers make me feel like I let her down.
Our Airedale male (yes, I'm an Airedale person) before that had an enlarged heart when he was 12; we had him put down with Mrs Hate and I present. He just gave a big sigh like he did when he went to sleep and that was it. Very humane since his life was miserable before that.
Thanks again for all the nice wishes.

My parents have an airedale about 12 yrs old with a leaky heart valve. He's not that nice a dog, kinda mean. But I had an airedale growing up that was great. Died the year after I went off to college.
Now I have a Dalmatian. Boy can he swim. Miles.
