The Accordion Thread

Inspired by the Galliano thread.

I love all sorts of accordion-centered music - zydeco, forro, musette, etc.

Two of the most amazing players I've seen are Regis Gizavo (Madagascar) & Kepa Junkera (Basque).

More when I'm not so tired.

Add your accordion thoughts.

I have really enjoyed hearing Joel Guzman with Joe Ely live and on CD. I saw an Joe Ely show last year with only Guzman backing up. Most of the songs they do were rehearsed, Ely wasn't afraid of doing audience requests and other matierial that Guzman didn't know. Guzman didn't have any problems picked up the new pieces and improvising his solos. Guzman plays on these Ely's "Twistin' in the Wind" and "Streets of Sin," The Flatlander's "Now Again," and Los Super Seven's debut and a variety of other Tex/Mex and country CDs. He plays a button accordion.

I love the Cajun accordionist, Marc Savoy. He has a huge sound that's instantly recognizable. His best work can be found on Arhoolie.

In recent years, there have been tours billed as Django Reinhardt Festival bands.

I think I'm getting this name correct:
Ludovic Beier who plays a button accordian is an absolute wizard on that instrument. Having seen him on 3 occasions was proof enough for me...

Teodoro Anzellotti's interpretations of Satie, on Winter & Winter are wonderful, outdoing most pianistic versions I've heard.

I really like Stian Carstensen although I've actually only heard him in duo with Iain Ballamy on The Little Radio and a BBC Jazz on 3 broadcast they did together.

track down a copy of the Planet Squeezebox set on Ellipsis Arts if you don't have it. A 3 disc sampler of accordion music from around the world, ranging from Pauline Oliveros to a Czech punk band. Great stuff, but I think it is long out of print.

I'm surprised he's not mentioned yet.
He died about 7-8 years ago, when He was 80 or so. He lived in Amsterdam, playing also a lot of popular music in all kinds of joints.
Archie Shepp called him the greatest accordeon player of the world....

There's a guy named Bill Schimmel who I've seen a couple of times with Ted Nash's tango/jazz ensemble who is pretty amazing.

Gotta be the same guy who's written some pieces for Klucevsek.

Bill was the accordionist in Tom Waits's band of the late 80s, and played on the albums Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years. He is also the accordionist who appears in the film Scent of a Woman as a member of the band who plays while Pacino dances the tango.

Dumb accordion joke:

An accordion player had to run an errand to the bad side of town on his way to a gig. He'd lost his trunk key, so when he ran in to take care of his errand in the bad part of town, he had to leave his accordion on the back seat, covered up with newspapers so as not to attract undue attention to it. But still, he had a bad feeling.

Sure enough, when he went back out to his car, his back window was broken out...now there were two accordions on the back seat.

_________________________________________________________________

I've had an accordion trio/quartet for about 14 years now, Banda de Brujos though I've never recorded the ensemble for a CD. We've scored several PBS documentaries, most notably "The Other Side of the Border", and a radio series about notable Hispanics in the U.S. We were most active during the 5 years or so that I was out of the jazz world. Probably our highest profile gig has been with Oliver Lake at the Dallas Museum of Art in the early 90's. The rest of the time we play a combination of traditional Hispanic music: huapangos, tangos, polkas, and such, and some of my jazz compositions - the best-known being 'Hymn for Julius Hemphill".

The two accordion players who've held the accordion chair in the group are Jesus Vasquez (on button accordion) and Mary Duren (on keyboard accordion). Both great, great accordionists, with very different approaches.

The 3 bass players who've alternated playing for the group are my son Aaron, Alex Camp, and Drew Phelps. My son Stefan often plays drums, and I play trumpet and guitar, and I sing.

Bill Schimmel is a funny guy. He was on the music faculty of Brooklyn College when I was an undergrad in the early 70s. I believe he's a former monk.

Has anybody seen Steve (Esteban) Jordan? I couldn't catch him when I was in San Antonio because I wasn't there the right day of the week for his regular gig.

I always enjoyed Tony Cedras' work in some of Threadgill's band, though I've never heard him, I don't think, in any other context.

In the summer of 1975 I saw Art Pepper [the one and only time for me] at the Lighthouse in Hermosa beach, CA

I remember the date because it was about 2 months before my daughter was born.

His 'keyboard' player was a guy who was nothing short of amazing on a Cordovox, and accordian with other electronic possibilities.

I'd love to know that guys name...

It was most probably Frank Marocco, who was playing Cordovox at the time. If he was also playing the bass parts from the button left hand, then it was definitely Frank.

Ooh, and I forgot Ross Bolleter. Bolleter's a fascinating Australian musician (originally referred to me by walto!) who specializes in performing on pianos and accordions that have been...weathered. ie, he'll play a piano that had been abandoned on the open roof of a bar for a decade or an accordion found buried in a basement since 1930. Great idea, imho, and often pretty amazing music. I prefer to think of the instruments as having been cured.

Two new ones that are very good with Ute Volker:

"Baggerboot" w/
Gunda Gottschalk - violin/viola
Peter Jacquemyn - double bass
Ute Volker - accordion
--Henceforth Records 102--

"Frutas Azules" by Partita Radicale w/
Ute Volker - accordion
Karola Pasquay - flute
Ortrud Kegel - bass flute
Gunda Gottschalk - violin
Thomas Beimel - viola
--Free Elephant 006--

I also picked up a disc on Col Legno featuring the music of
Toshio Hosokowa, featuring three pieces with the above mentioned
Stefan Hussong. "Sen V" and "Melodia" for solo accordion
and "In die Tiefe der Zeit" for cello, accordion, and string orchestra.

I love Will Holhauser. One of the most beautiful gigs I've heard in awhile was Will w/ Ron Horton on trumpet and I can't remember the bass player's name, at Barbes.
