Five weeks in NYC (meet us, advise us, etc.)

Some of you are possibly be sick of hearing this but Hande and I will be in New York city (we're staying in Fort Greene) from the 29th of November until the 2 of January. I will be busy most days between 12.00 and 7.30pm but would gladly try to make time to meet anyone in the mood.

I know DMG, Jazz Record Center, and Other Music but would very much welcome mentions of other music stores (second-hand would even be better) - and I would be just as much interested in stores selling classical music. Bookstores too, though with books I'm almost never looking for anything all that difficult to find so the larger chains would do well, I suppose. Finally places where I can pick up second-hand DVD's (of non-mainstream movies, too).

We will buy a guide, if only for the maps, so that should cover the museums

I have checked a number schedules and here are the concerts I'm interested in - residents would be privy to many more events, of course, so please let me know.

29 November The Thing+McPhee 8pm/10pm Stone
7 December Makigami Koichi 8pm/10pm Sings Japanese Folk Songs Stone
12 December Tim Berne and Hard Cell 55 Bar
20 December Mark Dresser Tonic
21 December Bobby Previte & Dave Binney 55 Bar
27 December Otomo Yoshihide 8pm/10pm Turntable solo/duo Stone
28 December Otomo Yoshihide 8pm Otomo quartet Stone
22 December Lehman/Sorey/Finlayson/Gress Jimmy's Restaurant

I also really wanted to see Richard Goode playing Beethoven (sonatas) at Carnegie Hall and the Tchaikovsky violin concerto/Sibelius's 5th/Weber's Bassoon concerto program at New York Philharmonic but with the prices they have, I had to drop them from the list, however reluctantly.

Hey, you ditched Jersey City?

Might try to make The Thing, especially if Reynolds is still showing up. Otherwise, I'll certainly be at one or more of the Otomo sets.

I don't know if it's changed since I was in NY, but if not, you absolutely *have* to check out Academy Music. I believe it's on 18th Street, somewhere on the West side of Manhattan. An absolutely fantastic selection of used classical music (though I'm not a classical expert, I have heard that same opinion from people who are). They also have a decent used jazz selection. And they have both CDs and vinyl.

I'm sure others will have lots of suggestions.

In any case have a great time in NYC! As I mentioned multiple times, I'm jealous. Sounds like a good live music schedule too. You can always pick up a Village Voice (free) or buy a Time Out (I think about 3 bucks) each week, and it will have an extensive list of what other shows are going on.

Brian - We got a good deal for this place and are paying minimal security deposit. I'll work on getting an affidavit from Reynolds about The Thing gig.

chuckyd4 - Thanks, I will look out Academy Music, seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Oh so Time Out is affordable in NYC, the London edition, for instance, makes you reach for a book or disc on sale instead.

I'd love to hang w/gnhrtg & other JC folks, but which concerts would I be most interested in do you all think? Or, if anyone is doing a pre-concert dinner hang, I'm up for that!

Can someone hip me to Otomo?

Mary, Mats and Joe are studs; I think you'd enjoy them somehwat along the lines that you enjoyed Ellery a couple of years back.

Otomo's a stud too. But you'd probably hate the music. Unless you've recently developed a taste for stereo needles being dragged across pieces of metal.

Gokhan, Kim's on St. Mark's might be a source for used, non-mainstream DVDs.

I don't want to seem to blatant , but I'll find out if the great JC Hopkins Biggish Band is playing during your stay.

My son and his family have a house in Ft. Greene.

There are some nice little restaurants in the neighborhood. Pete probably knows the names.

I suspect you haven't checked the Barbes schedule. There are a number of shows that would interest you. I likely won't make any on your list above. & I'll be away 12/22-28.

http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com/calendar.html

Also, check Cornelia Street Cafe.

9:00PM JOHN MCNEIL:
EAST COAST COOL
John McNeil, trumpet; Allan Chase, baritone saxophone; John Hebert, bass; Ted Poor, drums
On Friday, Dec. 16th John McNeil brings a striking new band called "East Coast Cool" to the Cornelia St. Cafe. They will be playing music from John's upcoming OmniTone CD of the same name (scheduled release, January 10th). The instrumentation of trumpet, baritone saxophone, bass and drums is a nod to the Gerry Mulligan pianoless quartets of the 1950's, but the music is contemporary and uses free form improvisation. It's a brand-new take on a classic concept.
Cover $10 www.mcneiljazz.com , www.omnitone.com

December 22 is Sheila Jordan & Cameron Brown

December 30 is Open Loose.

Gokham,

This may seem kinda boojie, but you should check out the Tower that's across the street from Other Music. Pretty good selection of so-called 'world' music.

Brian and Jon - I checked out another venue, something project?, and a James Fei - Sean Meehan duo looked interesting. Familiar at all with Fei's work in this vein? One more thing, Jon, if I want to pick up some erst/erstdist stuff, it's easy to arrange this, yes?

Pete - Thanks and no I had not checked Barbes's schedule. Quite a few interesting things there, in fact - Tim Berne, Malaby, Andy Statman, Slavic Soul Party (the last two might also very much appeal to Hande, actually), Oscar Noriega, and Jenny Scheinman - well I'm pretty sure most of these guys you've seen countless times but for a first timer like me, it looks very exciting.

Oh and we're making a list of places to eat, which we'll make sure to run through you before acting on.

Sergio - Noted. I will do that - though let me print out some of those "world music" threads here first.

So, forgive my ignorance, but, as a tourist, do I pay state tax?

And if any of you would like something from here, let me know.

Is Barbe's in Brooklyn?

gnhrtg,
You'll pay NYC sales tax on the things you buy, including meals in restaurants, and if you're lodging in a hotel there's a tourism fee [or tax?] on top of the sales tax, which may not be in all sections.

I'm a former NYer...sure the current crew will correct and clarify if need be.

Is that Issue Project Room in Brooklyn? Fei's work, imho, is hit and miss. I've seen some really nice stuff and heard (on disc) some pretty tedious stuff. I could see him working well with Sean if he restrains himself which I imagien he would in such a situation. Curious if he's playing alto or electronics (or both).

Oh Gökhan, you're such a Turk!

I'm really happy for you. You're gonna soak up so much in that fairly long stretch of time. A city just throbbing with the arts & culture. I assume you & Hande could not escape for a week out to Vancouver? Just to reiterate, you're always welcome to stay in my humble abode & check out some good home cooking at Rime along with some good tunes. The nature around here is not too shabby either.

Either way, have a blast! I know you will.

yes, Issue Project Room in Brooklyn on 12/6, www.issueprojectroom.org/events.html. I saw those two with John Butcher not too long ago, and James was very good, easily the best I've seen him. maybe I'll go to that too, although it's my first wedding anniversary, so we'll see.

erst/erstdist stuff: yes, it shouldn't be hard to arrange. if you want non-erst stuff, you need to arrange it with Chris, try to give him some advance notice. I still don't fully understand Brooklyn geography, but he's only a few subway stops away from Fort Greene, I believe.

That Village Tower across 4th from Other Music also has a decent jazz section (not used). It's jazz jazz from the current mainstream, and stuff from the days, generally, and pricey (no moreso than Other Music for new CDs, however) but it has a good selection. I think the world section Sergio was talking about is in their annex. Same building, different section and entrance. Last time I was there (a while back, now) the annex also had a sizeable classical section; I didn't look so can't talk about quality. Couldn't anyway as that's far from my specialty.

Academy, as mentioned, is a used store and sometimes real gems can be found in the jazz section, but you have to wade through a lot of others to find them.

Jazz Record Center is a used store, more expensive by a couple of dollars/CD than Academy but with a much more discriminating selection. Most of the CDs are stored in file cabinets by alphabetical order, so it can take some time to check out, but I always spend more money than I thought I was going to when I go there, so it's worth a good look-through. By the way, the Jazz Record Center can be hard to find because it's on one of the upper floors. Go to the street address, check the building directory in the entranceway and take the elevator. Another thing: Go on a week day. They're closed on Saturdays (or were last time I was there).

Pete's rec of Mondo Kim's can also be a good one for finding hard-to-find gems. I found the o.o.p. Slide Ride on Hat, there, for example, after looking for it for several years unsuccessfully. It's not inexpensive, on the whole, but it has a good selection for one of your tastes.

When I'm in New York, however, I will often look for titles at DMG that caught my eye in either Other Music or Kim's before buying, because DMG often times (not always) has some of the same titles for a better price. The three of them are within easy walking distance from each other.

Have a great time. I wish I could make it down to meet you and enjoy a part of your visit with you in my favorite city.

Live music of course won't be any problem to find, and you'll likely see more listings to choose from once there.

Can't vouch for the food but there's a Turkish restaurant, half a block south from the southeast corner of Tompkins Square, west side of street. I made a mental note for myself to check it next time I'm in the city.

A Turk, indeed, Cem. Not this time, we can't make it to Vancouver, I'm afraid - due not to lack of time, but to lack of money, unfortunately. But I might just be in Vancouver between the 25th and 30th of April, for the 16th Sunbelt, a social network conference (takes place at Coast Plaza Hotel, anywhere near where you live - if I may be so impudent to ask?).

Brian - Fei is listed as playing electronics.

Gary - Thanks a lot! Yes I really wish you could, too. But now that I, finally, have a visa, I will try to put aside money to come again, at least for the major festivals which see large JC hangs.

Gokhan, Barbes is an easy 1-bus commute from where you're staying. The B-67 bus stops fairly near your apartment at Flatbush & Atlantic, and will take you to 7th Avenue & 9th St. Barbes is on 9th Street between 6th & 7th Avenue (closer to 6th). The bus runs every 1/2 hour at night.

I think you're also near A & G train stops, both of which can connect to the F, which also goes to 7th Ave & 9th St. Going to the East Village or Lower East Side, your best train bet is probably A-train to Jay Street to connect to the F-train. I think the Apartment is right near the Lafayette A train station in Fort Greene.

Your location is great for subway access, as you're in reasonable walking distance of the Lafayette, Nevins, DeKalb and Atlantic stations, which serve a wide range of lines.

Sure. Pretty close. About 10 minutes by car & about 20 minutes by transit. Just give me the word & come stay here. I'll be offended if you stay elsewhere.

Gokhan, you might want to check out one or two of these, not sure:

http://www.gardenvariety.org/project...stcharles.html

I'll probably go to the Lucier and/or the Feldman. the Young sounds cool, but too pricy, although I think the room is very small. coming to any of these, Ollie?
