The "D" Word

No one is saying it out loud. Not the weather people, not the newspapers. But it's mid-November and as the sun dips behind Twin Peaks, it's 66 degrees in SF and 67 degrees in Oakland. An hour ago it was well over 70 and some places might have hit 80 today. We've had barely an inch of rain in Oakland. I looked at the seven day forecast on the Weather Channel yesterday and it was sunny every day, no fog, no overcast, just warm, dry weather. At this time of year, we've had several rain events and one or two good storms. Oy.

You guys can have some of the rain we've been getting here in upstate New York. Today it was pretty brutal, lots of rain, high winds. And it's getting cold tonight.

Today was the first really cold day of November around here. We were in the 60s over the weekend, which is insane for Detroit in the middle of November. Today it finally dipped into the 30s during the afternoon. We saw flurries of snow, too.

It is a little too dry here.

It is the middle of November and it was so warm that I wore a dress today.

I hope that the rain will come soon.

Plenty of rain on the Cape this fall. Lately the weather has been doing an alternate hot/cold thingy, though. Today was very warm.

We're in a full-on drought here in NC. Noone's shy about using the d-word.

DC area had a drought in September - not a drop. Then Tropical Storm Tammy(?) caught up the year in the first 4 days (or so) of October.

Oct. and Nov. are always the best months in the Bay area. Actually, they are the best months almost anywhere.

We've had the Santa Ana conditions our way this week with very low humidity and temps in the low 80's The wind hasn't blown too hard. I love it! Santa Anas always kick up my endorphins, unless they are the 40mph kind. Then we worry about brush fires.

Rainy (no pun intended), we'll be fine. Last winter was one of the wettest winters on record. Resevoirs are still very high throughout the state. Enjoy it while you can, rain will be here soon enough.

I wouldn't miss it if it didn't rain all winter. This is perfect running weather, low 80s, high 70s, clear blue sky with just a couple of whisps of cloud to the west. I just finished rehearsing and choreographing tonight's dance, so I'll do the dishes, make yet another phone call to try to straighten out my daughter's tickets for Coldplay, and I'm off for a six-miler. I love this weather!

I've lived here for 18+ years and some rain is usually here by the end of October. November is usually cooler with rain and some some nice, clear mild days in between. I don't remember a time when we've had red alerts for fire danger in the Oakland Hills in November. It's very warm, we are having offshore winds, and the humidity is very low. We are having record breaking temps this week. This is not typcial weather for us at all. I understand the Pacific Northwest is also very dry and warm. I am from there and November is cold and rainy up there.

I work in SF and when I leave the office at 5:30, it is bloody warm and balmy outside. That is not normal.

It was 79 degrees in SF yesterday. That's hot for SF for any time of year, but certainly in November.

Oh, yeah! Very late crush this year! The manager of the Dry Creek Gallo operation dances with me, and we always lose him in the fall until the crush is over. The heavy rains -- was it last week or the week before -- put an immediate end to the season. It's all in by now.

But they really needed that late Indian Summer we got, because our spring rains lasted so long. And summer was mild.

Summer might have been mild for you guys, but we broke heat records left and right in the Valley.

Maybe, but we got the numbers. No matter which way our tipsy tourists turn, they're bound to make a soft landing in somebody's winery or tasting room.

No matter which way out tourists turn, they're going to drive off the side of a mountain. Which is where we like them.

Here's the "normal" precipitation for San Francisco over a 30-year period starting with January. October averages only a little over an inch while November is over 3 inches. Jan-March are the rainy months.

SAN FRANCISCO C.O., CA 4.72 4.15 3.40 1.25 0.54 0.13 0.04 0.09 0.28 1.19 3.31 3.18
Annual Total: 22.28
