Apple Computer Terrorist
Apple Computers are the scourge of the computer/internet world.
If you haven't got an Apple computer good damn luck with streaming video that is Apple Computer supported.
As an example, I was watching the Cream streaming video on drummerworld.com and got kicked off three times. The error message was that Apple does not support non-Apple systems.
This is patent bullshit.
It is also why I did not buy an Apple Computer in the first place.
They are all about buying/supporting/kissing the ass of their support systems. Their software doesn't work with non-Apple systems and little else is compatable with IBM clones.
You Apple guys think Bill Gates is all about greed? Well, think again.
Apple computers SUCK.

Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed? I find it hard to believe that you cannot watch it on a PC.
It works both ways. 75 percent of the streaming video out on the internet is Windows Media. Microsoft hasn't updated the Mac version of Windows Media Player in years.

I'm not really sure what the problem is exactly (doesn't sound very clear except that one streaming video you were trying to watch wasn't working).
I have used both PC and Mac, and have used Mac software on a PC and PC software on a Mac. Never had much of a problem with any of it as long as I keep it updated to the latest versions.
EDIT: Just realized you mean you're using a PC and the Quicktime video wouldn't work for you. (FWIW, it might help to explain in your first post at least what kind of hardware you're working with.) It does clearly say you need at least Quicktime 7 for the video to work, so maybe that's your problem? When I still had a PC I never had a problem getting Quicktime to work on it.

Uh ..Goodie :
um ..Apple computers do not suck, and in fact are the primary choice of the musical and graphics professions.
furthermore, Macs work easily in combination with PC for many applications..
My windows Media Player works quite well in opening and displaying stuff from my PC using friends .. Quicktime should do the same for you on a PC
chill out ....
sheesh!

Goody, you're getting some good responses and advice here. Please heed it.
First of all, I've never seen such a QuickTime error message, and I surf a lot. I also use QuickTime player on my pc. In fact, I'm watching and listening to Cream's Reunion 2005 - Royal Albert Hall (Tuesday, May 3, 2005) from drummerworld. com as I type. It takes a while to fully download, though.
Graypencil is absolutely correct in his assertions, as are Chris (and others) who advise you to update your QuickTime player. Every once in a while you must update most software, like it or not.
Finally, streaming audio/video can be problematic from a dialup. I should know. I'm on a 56k dialup, myself. A high-speed connection makes all the difference in the world, regardless of the software being utilized.
Update you QuickTime player. Click on Help, then Update existing software.

I believe the purple smiley indicates that although he knew it already, this thread helped to *remind* him to update Quicktime.

Seeking recommendations
I'm using this existing thread to ask for recommendations from Apple users. I'm thinking of getting myself a laptop, and would like to get a Mac of some kind. No intensive or specialized use planned, just ordinary office applications, web browsing, simple CD listening and DVD viewing. What are the options?

Then why a Mac in particular? Is it because you have a Mac desktop at home or work?

No, I just feel like testing the assertions of my Mac-using friends who tell me they never have any problems with their computer.
I'm not a super-power-user or anything, but I have taken many precautions to keep my PCs at home and the office running smoothly. Anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall; regular flushing of memory, clearing out useless files, defragmenting the hard disk, defragmenting the registry. Something is always going wrong nonetheless. Most recently my home computer refuses to connect to the Internet on my wireless router; it tells me that PCP/IP isn't authorized, although it always used to be and for the life of me I can't figure out what might have happened to de-authorize it. One day it just said no. So I've been using my work laptop at home, where it has no problem with the wireless connection.
My Mac-using friends react smugly and tell me they never have any problems like that, everything just runs smoothly and they don't even have to think about it. So what the hell, I'll see if they're right.

If you're a PC user in other corners of your life I don't know why you'd want to spend more for a Mac laptop and deal with compatibility issues between machines, software and files on top of that. I'd recommend to stick with one platform.
For instance, there are proprietary file systems for each OS (NTFS for PC, HFS+ for MAC, that are non-compatible, so you'd have to have any devices to share files formatted as FAT32, which is more limited but can be read by both). You likely wouldn't be able to load software bought for one OS on the other, etc., so you're dealing with the extra expense of duplicate software.
If you're looking for optimum portability, I'd look at Ron's thread about his netbook.

And my little Samsung NC10 is often mistaken for an Apple ... at least my white one is.
I love it, by the way! 2.9 lbs. of fun.
Check out these reviews from owners, Tom.

You really should get your facts straight before you start flapping your gums in public. Apple streaming technology works just fine with non-apple platforms. I suspect that drummerworld.com just has a shitty streaming service. I don't know what you mean by "about buying/supporting/kisisng the ass of their support systems" and you say yourself that "little else is compatiable with IBM clones...." whatever that's supposed to mean.
If it's not drummerworld.com, then I'm guessing you either have an antique or broken computer.

The best thing about Apple is ipod.
I've always used PCs. I've used my son's Apple on occasion and find it a bit frustrating. PC users are used to fiddling with the Windows setup. From what I saw, Apple is not very fiddleable.

Wrong again. macs are basically UNIX machines. They are the ultimately fiddlable platform. You just need to know what you're doing to fiddle them. It's windows that's the odd platform out....

Clint just has the same problem I had as a long-time PC user who now has a mac at work--when something is conceptually different and doesn't act the way you expect it to you get frustrated and blame it for being wrong.
