Still, $49 for any decent saxophone is tempting, even if it needs a bit of work. He should've worn a shirt for the picture, though.

Not exactly, but I did try out a ref 54 that got me thinking. I also have a potential line on a mint MkVI through an estate. But I'm not actively looking, my tenor is good for my needs right now.

YTS 23. Since I am just a hobbyist, I have a hard time justifying the cost of the horns I mentioned above but they are awfully nice.

Depending on the price, you might want to "invest" in that MkVI. (That's what I tell my wife when I buy a new horn.) Those MkVIs are always in demand.
I had a MkVI, but I sold it. I was just as happy with my Keilwerth SX90. (yes, I know that is blasphemy.)

Do you think the prices will continue to rise? I've played my instructor's 5 digit mk VI and while it was really nice, I actually preferred the sound and feel of the ref 54 tenor. In any case, I can't see myself laying out the $5k plus for either of those, so I'll keep honkin on the yamaha.

Good question on whether the price will continue to rise. I dunno.
Seems like Selmer is trying to address the popularity of the old horns with the new reference 54s and ref. 36s
I was able to buy my (six digit) MkVI on eBay for $1,900 and turn around and sell it.
If I were in the market for a new tenor now, I would probably be trying out Yamahas and Yanis.
The only thing that is on my wish list now is a newly overhauled Conn M12 bari that my repairman is selling for $950. I need it like I need a hole in my head, but my mouth is watering. I keep telling myself I could always sell it for what I have in it if I get cold feet.

I'd hate to see a stritch or manzello hanging on a wall, they should be played.
