How do you keep from getting fat?
I ran for a long time, but knees don't like that anymore. I've been walking, but that doesn't seem to help nearly as much.
What do you do?

For winter, I have been considering a rowing machine but for now it's stationary bike and weights along with a bit of cross country skiing whenever I can.

Try eating small amounts of food six times per day as opposed to large amounts of food three times a day.
Eat less food that has/had a face. (really it works).

I'm 61 and still running almost every day, and have for decades. My short, heavy legs always hurt me in terms in of stride-length and speed, but they've held up well with extensive use. Never had a problem.
If I could sustain my focus on a better diet I'd be more successful in losing weight, but it's a struggle.

I wish someone would tell me the secret. I have had a weight problem since I was a kid. I seems that all I have to do is smell food and I put on weight.
Weight trainning helps a lot but right now I don't have the time and it really sucks.

OK, but Rollhead should check out this, this and this first.
Or maybe he should just paddle more. Personally I am dependent on real winters to stay fit.

If you *really* have trouble keeping weight off, one thing you should do is have a doc check your metabolism (thyroid). Maybe there are other things an endocrinologist would know to check, but having a TSH test done is quick/easy, and hypothyroidism, should it be present, is easily corrected.
I run a lot, I watch what I eat, I count calories, although not the point of obsession, and I swim, bike, and lift as well, time/energy permitting.

I ride my bike.
My bike has pink Dale Evans saddlebags and frilly fender covers, so I have to ride fast 'cause the other kids throw rocks.

I've been a runner for a long time. My back and legs can't take hard surfaces any more. So I run on a soft Treadmill. Thank God for Treadmills. Without them, I wouldn't be running any more.
If you want to go even easier on your legs, there is always the Stairstepper or the Eliptical whatchamacallit. There are getting pretty close to a running machine that eliminates leg and back stress altogether.
I also lift weights every other day. I've been doing it religiously for more than 10 years, and really recommend it. If you are going to put on weight, it is nice to put it on in the right places. I am fairly heavy for my height, but still pretty thin. If I didn't lift, I am sure that the weight would be somewhere else. Lifting weights also makes you feel a lot better physically.

Racquetball and golf.
I could stand to lose about 15-20 pounds, but that would involve not drinking wine, not eating rich foods, deserts....any food with actual flavor.

I almost completely quit eating meat (except seafood--can't and won't give up sushi) almost three years ago. I lost twenty pounds in a year without any significant amount of exercise. And I just generally felt better. Best thing I ever did for myself, really. I rarely miss it, though I might eat a little turkey this Thanksgiving.
I've been trying to exercise regularly for the past couple of months. Just turned 35 and my body started to fall apart so I figured I'd better get to work.

Vegetarian food to balance (a little) for alcohol, coffee, cigarettes and average 16 hours shifts 5 days a week + some week-ends.
I'll die before I put on weight.

You gotta go with what works for you. Humans are varied enough that any recommendation of a one-size-fits-all approach must be suspect, at least to me. I'm not a vegetarian, I doubt I ever will be. Refined carbs are part of my diet. I find that the middle road works best for me, unless I'm ramping up my training, in which case, I increase the ratio of carbs, as would almost any endurance athlete. But that works for me, and it might not work for a lot of folks. I would pick exercise based partially on what burns calories effectively...but only partially. If you don't enjoy it enough to stick with it, it's probably not the right program for you. I love running and can't imagine not doing it, but I have friends who hate it as much as I love it. Play tennis, play basketball, play ultimate frisbee, walk, mow the lawn, go hiking, swim, whatever - but I wouldn't turn it into some monastic obsession unless it's your One True Passion or your livelihood. Same goes for diet - even Deena Kastor (SQDCS knows of whom I speak) has said, no way she gives up her glass of wine with supper. A diet you can't stick with will only lead to binging and swinging the other way. My diet might work for you, it might not, but if you find yourself miserable on it, it ain't right for you.

I highly advise lifting weights regularly. No matter what you do or want to do, it has benefits.
