Has anyone heard this recording or heard of Hilary? "Noble Savage" was his debut recording as a leader with Bobby Sanabria's band. It came out last fall to good writeups from the Boston press and it recently got a positive review in the last Jazztimes (may issue). I think the Jazz Improv magazine published one of his charts.
Hilary calls his music "free latin jazz" (with tongue-in-cheek) although it's maybe more "post-cubop"?. I don't know what to compare it to but I like it. He's played around the Boson area mostly as a sideman throughout much of the 90s so I doubt he's much known outside of the area.
Hot band, great Afro-Cuban influenced percussion, and good originals. Very cool guy. I knew him a bit before he quit his day job. He's as much a percussionist as he is a hornplayer. In fact percussion was his first instrument when he went to Berklee in the late 70s. He picked up the sax while at Berklee. Later studied with sax w/ Yusef Lateef at UMass and with Cuban percussion master Maximino Duquesne.
I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the recording or Hilary's music if you know him.
