My Secret Shame

I have a good friend who is into some big bands, but mostly bop and jazz of the 50s and early 60s. Thousands of LPs and CDs.

His 'secret shame' ? Charlie Spivak. He gets every Charlie Spivak release he can get his hands on.

My secret shame : Vaughn Monroe.

Yours?

That must have been a fancy gig to have Vaughn Monroe there. Did you hire the whole band?

He had a good band in the 40s and gave his guys lot of room to play, even doing quite a few instrumentals where he didn't sing a note.

I like his singing style. No jazz and since he was trained as an operatic singer, he has a certain masculine power to his voice that is refreshingly different than the other 'boy' singers of the period. Kind of in the Art Lund and Dick Haymes category.

Oh, well.......

well, john, kind of sorry to say that i wasn't at my parent's wedding!! but, i really don't know how many pieces of his band was hired. the year was 1939. don't think the wedding was fancy but i believe that my father had done some p.r. for him so he probably did somewhat of a favor for him in return.

Yes...hardly seems likely that you would have been there, especially to hire the band.

1939 - Wow. Must have been a brand new band then. I cant place any Monroe sides before 1940. Gotta look at that online Bluebird listing.

Thanks for the memories.

Lots of Monroes from 1940, but nothing from 1939. Maybe he had not begun to record yet.

Early Elton John, ditto early Cat Stevens. Don't listen to them much, but once in a while I get a craving for studio cotton candy. Burn down the mission.

Every so often, someone starts a "guilty pleasure" thread, and I'm compelled to confess that I find Karen Carpenter's voice and phrasing irresistable, then I get a few tomatoes tossed at my manhood, and I go back to my hole until the next thread surfaces.

Yes, Doc doesn't realize that he should really be ashamed of his love for the Dead.

I could probably list one thousand artists that I would prefer not to listen to rahter than not listen to Herb Alpert.

Ugh....badly worded.

Herb Alpert aint so bad. Thousands of other 'artists' are so bad.

HA! TJ5 may have been the last decent instrumental group to be of wide interest to the public....more so than Kenny G.

Hail, Herb!

I have his Greatest Hits CD.

Ray Noble! Great band! The British one, at least.

His "Very Thought of You" was very thoughtful. And anyone who can take such abuse from Charlie McCarthy is OK in my book.

And it is easy to imitate his one note piano style in your own home!

Bergen was brilliant.

As a teenager in the late 60s, I have to confess that listening and playing Herb's music is where I learned to play standards. Really, Herb did a lot of standards arranged to fit that mariachi beat of his, and though I didn't appreciate it at the time, in later years I had those tunes at my fingertips when I really needed them. So, I'll second the "Hail, Herb!"

I had a friend in school at the same time, Charlie Bowers, who was always toting around the same Herb Alpert LPs.

I only owned one or two of them. I bought GOING PLACES on the strength of the TJ5 version of "I'm Gettin' Sentomental Over You". I still like it.

This is a great source of amusement and ball breaking by some Bop loving hipsters I play poker with: “Hey Doc, play some Buddy Holly” followed by hysterics. Having said that they’re dumb enough to poker with a guy named Doc!

You got me there. The last haircut I got (about 18 months ago), one of the above mentioned hipsters said “Nice head Doc, where did you get it? To which I replied “At hundreds of Dead shows”

My faves are the earlier ones: Dis, Dansere, Witchi-Tai-To, and also Wayfarer, and the "world" albums. I saw him last week with the Hilliard Ensemble. Not very impressed by the music, too monotonous, although Jan had a few very nice moments. Their concert in 1997 or 1998, in Liverpool was much better. "Visible World", "Rites", the recent one with Vitous, and now the one with Kathé just do nothing for me.
Actually, I am not ashamed of owning all those albums, because he did record some great stuff.

More ashamed of having bought almost every albums Chicago put out. Some are really bad.
