It seems like he might have thought Part 1 was of age. Once again, Part 2 has made him a celebrity.

"Before this, I never suspected him" of doing anything he's accused of, said Tran Cong Khanh, 48. "I thought he just liked children."
Anyone who actually "likes" having children around is to be viewed suspiciously. Any parent can tell you that. Loving them with all your heart and laying down your own life for them is one thing. "Liking" them is quite another.

Amen. I love my own child infinitely, but I despise all other children. They are grubby little slobbering beasts. I think that is the normal attitude. That's why I simply cannot understand a crime like abducting a child. A stranger's child. What, are you stupid? You don't have to put yourself in that position. It is so counter-intuitive.

There's a guy in the local market that makes a big deal of slobbering over babies when they come inwith their parents. Aniother guy there told me that it is all an act to make him and the store seem 'family friendly'. His actions are so phoney and not the way a guy acts when he sees a little baby or kid.
I dunno....I don't have kids, so maybe some guys are just goo-goo nutty.
My only goal if I see a little infant or super toddler looking in my direction is to see if I smile and they will smile back. I dont care if they are cute or ugly. They get such a short time to be happy w/o hassles.
KIds- their world is so small that everything looms hugely to them.

Apparently they haven't quite got the hang of "cynicism" in Vietnam.

I don't know how we manufacture dirtballs like this, but there seems to be no shortage of them.
I mean, how could anyone even consider molesting a child?
It sickens me.

Plus he's really glittery, so he can dazzle his captors and make a break for the border with a couple of hot kids.

If Gary Glitter is tied up due to legal problems, as an alternative I'd suggest Liberace and Gorn.

If Glitter doesn't get executed, he can still make a comeback duet with Michael Jackson.

Actually it's probably only because he's famous that they're having to take it seriously for the international media. Unfortunately most of the Southeast Asian governments turn a blind eye to 'child sex tourism' because the influx of obese slobbering American and European men benefits the weak economies. The libertarians on this board no doubt regard this form of imperialist abuse as an entirely legitimate practice.

You should read Houellebecq's excellent Platform, about the European trade in Asian bodies. It's a novel, of course, told in a morally disinterested but highly aware voice. Very interesting. I don't know if your Pedantry could take it, but the Wretch in you would love it. The whole thing ends in jihadic explosions.

As long as you're going to climb on your soapbox (and not unjustifiably, I concede), you might want to note that a good bit of that income also derives from "corporate retreats" for Asian firms as well. It isn't *just* horrible oppressive Westerners who keep the sex money engine going. Let's not forget the sale of child brides to Gulf nations from India or the huge brothel communities in Mumbai and Kolkata, neither of which cater much to Westerners, but both of which do a healthy trade in workers who'd be considered underage by our standards. There's plenty of blame to go around.

Gary's Side of the Story
My favotite quote:"... he only wanted to teach them English."
I'm sure the prisoners and guards in Vietnam are going to give him a warm welcome, too. "Come on in, Mr. 60-year-old makeup-wearing foreigner who has sex with children."
If I was a gambling man, hold on, I am a gambling man, so I’ll bet he's going to flee the country within the next week or so and go somewhere that doesn't extradite him to Vietnam. Long story short: Gary Glitter is going to France. Hey, it worked for Roman Polanski.
Glitter says girls in child sex claims lied about ages
John Aglionby
Wednesday November 23, 2005
The Guardian
Gary Glitter has claimed to Vietnamese police that the girls he took to his house lied to him about their ages and that he did not knowingly have sex with any minors, local media reported yesterday.
The rocker, detained in the resort town of Vung Tau since Saturday amid allegations that he sexually molested at least one minor, allegedly said he only wanted to teach them English. Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has not been charged and can be held for nine days. Police are investigating claims by two girls, aged 12 and 18, that he paid them £5.50 a time for sex.

It's not about child sex, but you'll no doubt develop Pedantic Wrath by reading John Burdett's detective novels set in the midst of Thailand's professional sex business, "Bangkok Eight" and "Bangkok Tattoo." Burdett doesn't prettify anything, but he does make a point of portraying Bangkok prostitutes as sharp businesspeople, not victims. And Sonchai Jitpleecheep is one of the coolest detectives in all of fiction, if I do say so myself.
