In The Evening She's My Water: The Sam & Dave Thread
"Small Portion Of Your Love", maybe the underrated soul song of all time, "I Take What I Want" just as derelict. Sam Moore shoots through schools, I've seen him a bunch of times at a bunch of casinos and school picnics--doesn't matter. Undiluted passion. You laid the cornerstone for a home in my heart.

Have you seen any footage from the Stax-Volt European tour? A couple of S&D performances are included on this Otis DVD:

During some hiatus in my college years I had a job at an insurance company in downtown Boston, handwriting numerical codes all day long. What kept me sane was that on every lunch break I would visit a greasy-spoon pizza parlor, hit a jukebox that had monstrous volume levels, and blast "I Thank You" into the street.

A beautiful, beautiful tune.
I was lucky enough to catch the Sam & Dave Revue back in 1968. A 90 minute show, and I think they were on for about 20 minutes. It was all right: They gave off enough energy in those 20 minutes to light New York City for a year.

Damn. I never got to hear them live.
I made a tape once from the Stax/Volt Singles box (V.1) of all the Otis and Sam And Dave singles in chronological order. That was a rockin' tape. I should do it again with the burner.

It's not as well known, but I love "Don't Make It So Hard on Me".
A great low-key tune that's a nice little spin on their style.
Cheers,
Rob

They didn't talk to each other for years. Sam once hired a replacement "Dave." I thought that was priceless.

My roommate just received two S&D comps.
This:
. . .which is one of the strangest fucking things I've ever seen (I'm the one that gets the weird packaging). It's four discs, Hold On, I'm Comin', Double Dynamite, Soul Men and I Thank You which look thusly -- like reissues complete with original janky, glorious cover art. Yet all these discs and a foam divider are housed in a brass-hinged wooden box. The discs were stickered and wrapped within the box and had sawdust all over them. Haven't listened yet, ton of songs I've not heard from them, including the one Hoot cites above, looking forward to it.
And this:
. . .which is in my opinion a great 'new' cashcow sampler over two discs for the money. It indeed has "This Is Your Love" as well as a non-LP Atlantic single from 1970 backed by The Dixie Flyers called "Knock It Out The Park". Wow! Replete with that very late 60s/early 70s pissed off hot asphalt funk that are always the last songs on old soul anthologies ("We're A Winner", "Engine No. 9", et. al.), probably best baseball song I've ever heard (2. Sister Wynona, 3. Philip Samartzis' "NHK Radio"). There are references to pinch hitting, swinging for the fences, and an actual crack of the bat whenever they revisit the theme. So awesome!
It also features the marvelous "Don't Pull Your Love". When I was a young lad my friend and I (said roommate) played the bloody hell out of a S&D cassette. All the hits but different or altered bands or takes. "Don't Pull" was on here, we haven't heard it since. Dave gets no more streetcorner on record.
Here's that tape, which was lost years ago:

Sam and Dave provided something like the ideal showcase for the strength of Stax production. Isaac Hayes and David Porter did most of the writing, and those horn arrangements were killers.
Yes, "When Something Wrong With My Baby" is one of the greatest soul ballads. If you've heard it once, it always stays with you.

I recently purchased their greatest hits CD. The tune that I was unaware of was "Don't Hold Your Love Out On Me Baby" which was later shmaltzed up and made a hit by Hamilton, Joe, Frank and Reynolds. Both versions are a pleasure. (HJF&R's was a guilty one.)

Good point RD. . .listening through the fifteen or so songs I've previously not heard from that box set last night, I had forgotten how much of this stuff came from Sunday mornin'. That's an awesome song, too.

I've seen Sam a bunch of times, and S&D on a friend's DVD. You really can't stop sweating.
