The Microphone Thread

Do any of you guys and gals have any preference for a particular microphone in a particular application? Forinstance, which mic do you prefer for live vocal performance as to your preference for a vocal mic used for recording? Right now I'm in the process of acquiring mics for live performance and recording.
For live performance I am using EVco4's,SM57's and Atm63's for Instruments and Samson R11's, EVco9's for vocal. They all seem to work well when EQ'ed and Mixed properly. I have found that some "knock offs" work as good or better than the mic they are immitating. I just picked up 3 ES57's which sound as good as if not better than the SM57's.
In your opinion is the choice of a mic not really that important?
Just curious, we talk about every thing else here but I never see much discussion on the equipment we use.

I use an EV N/D 767a for voice, and yes I think it's very important for me to have a mic that suits my voice.

Do you look in the AUDIOPHILES forum? You'll see lots of equipment threads there.

A couple of Microphones threads were started there, but they weren't continued.

Shure 58: Old reliable. I've been using the same one for vocals since 1986.

Ya know Dr Dave, my nephew is a recording engineer and he spends a lot of energy knocking my SM57's and EVCO4's. The SM57 isn't one of the most popular mics in the world for nothing and they sound great to me. The EvCO4's sound real good too.
