Tylenol poisoning

Shit's serious. We had a friend who died this year, not only but largely due to cumulative overdoses, for years, even though already being treated for years, ironically, for hepatitis. We told her repeatedly to tell her doctor not to prescribe percocet, which is almost entirely tylenol (a huge dose), and to have the doc prescribe oxycodone, perc's active ingredient, instead. She didn't listen. No she can't.

Bronwyn figured this shit out for herself --and for her doctors as well -- not a one of whom had ever considered the cumulative effects on one's liver of major doses hidden in all sorts of drugs, both prescription and over the counter, while doing their prescribing. They all acted like they were surprised by Bronwyn's idea, never having thought much about it. Bronwyn, who has to take mucho medications, had no choice but to think things through, having only one liver and a desire to live.

People who regularly drink alcohol have much to fear in this regard, also, but I've yet to see one change his or her ways when warned.

Tylenol can do some serious liver damage. I guess the hospitals dole the stuf out because they get a bunch of free Tylenol.

Of course, acietominaphin can attack the kidney functions.

Neither should be used prohylactically.

Having drunk more than my share (plus your and his share) for several years (though not for the last couple, thank whomever), I stay away from that shit and always read the label.
Very sorry about your friend.

It sure is, and for some reason most of the people I know think it's just "fine" to take it for whatever. imo, it's not a replacement for good ole' Aspirin.

very sorry about your friend, Gary!

Thanks. I'm sorrier for her husband who had to watch the whole deal play out and provide the huge bulk of her care over the last year, while also working to pay the Man, and now a 16 y.o. to finish raising on his own. They were together for the whole of his adult life into middle age. It wasn't pretty.

Far too many people fail to take these drugs seriously despite all evidence of the harm they can do if taken regularly. The worst part, though, is the hidden aspect. A perc, for example, is only 5mg's worth of oxycodone; it's almost entirely acetiminophen. The other worst part is doctors failing to take into account the cumulative effects -- many don't seem to even know what all ingredients are in the meds they prescribe -- for people on several or many medications, never mind the various over the counter products, which I guess people consider safe because they're over the counter, that people take on top and in addition to prescribed meds.

Which isn't to say they are harmful if used correctly. Far too many people fail to pay attention, though.
