What are your OTHER bbs and e-groups?

Besides JC, my main other site is ICC, which has been taking up far too much of my late night time. Playing chess in the hypnogogic state between dreaming and wakefulness is not good for one's rating. Love the site, though. It's a chessplayer's dream: to be able to get a game with somebody good at any hour of the day or night, and to compete with players from all over the world. On the days where I don't get carried away -- maybe one day game and one or two night games -- I'm tremendously grateful for it. My standard rating is 1711, or just a few dozen points lower than my old USCF rating. I'm getting better at Blitz, and have grown to love it, but my rating is still only 1408. I still get into time trouble regularly and have yet to win a single game -- even against patzers -- with zero incremental time. A huge weakness.

The ICC interface for the Mac is called Fixation, and I belong the the Fixation e-group, to keep up with bugs and improvements.

I also belong to two fairly active, informative, and occasionally acerbic square dance e-groups, one for callers in northern California, the other for dancers in the same region.

And I've recently joined and am enjoying the busy Gaddis e-group, although I've yet to post there. (Joe Milazzo has, though!)

I am a somewhat regular poster on carolinabirds, a listserv for birding in the Carolinas, and I post occasionally on AAJ, and I read (but don't really post on) several other birding forums. I also subscribe to justjazz, a list for technical discussion of jazz performance, much of which is more advanced (in some cases, quite significantly) than I can follow, but it's a good way for a hobbyist musician to learn bits and pieces.

I also subscribe to (and occasionally post on) several technical listservs/newsgroups for various flavors of software development and architecture.

No other bbs' really. bagatellen.com isn't quite a bbs, though it allows some back and forth (excellent site, btw).

I get a few e-mail lists including the electroacoustic-list, zorn-list, Silence (Cage-oriented) and forum-hub (new music).

And, of course, the cruciverba-list.

I occasionally post at AAJ, but it's kinda slow over there. And yes, there's less talk about stuff that interests me over there.

I shuttle back and forth between JC, AAJ, and Organissimo, with about 4 daily stops at versiontracker.com

I also make one or two weekly stops at LoveMacs.com, apple.com, and somewhat fewer stops at jerryjazz.com (because it changes infrequently).

Other than that, I move all over the place for my research and shopping needs. One of my computers stays online and alerts me each time I get mail.

Oh, and I sometimes relax with a jigsaw puzzle at jigzone.com.

I subscribe to some jazz related lists and the electro-acoustic one, but typically fall way behind in my list reading.

At various times, I've subscribed to lists about

Miles
Trane
Ornette
Dolphy
Cecil Taylor
Anthony Braxton
Keith Jarrett
Avant Garde

single malt scotch
The Wire (TV Show)

Pre-JCS days, I was a semi-active participant on the Miles List but now only subscribe so that I'm eligible for the cdr trees of live Miles (and Wayne) music.

I wish there was a decent list for french bulldog owners but there isn't.

I like to read blogs, such as
command-post.org
instapundit.com (Glenn Reynolds)
andrewsullivan.com
denbeste.nu (Stephen Den Beste)
talkingpointsmemo.com (Josh Marshall)
politicalwire.com
janegault.net (Megan McArdle)

I used to LOVE my Trollope list, but I couldn't keep up, so I dropped it. Now it's just bagatellen and here.

Steve -- thanks to you for pointing me to that Gaddis list. A Joe McElroy list has grown out of that particualr forum, and I will definitely be following the discussion there.

Otherwise, Bagatellen and some work-related stuff on government information policies.

In addition to posting and admin-ing here, I run the Mighty Ducks Mailing List and one for film snobs like myself. As soon as real life permits I will be contributing to Bagatellen (honest, Al!)

Here and AAJ mostly. That takes up about all the extra time I have.

AAJ is not as lively as the Corner, but there are some very knowledgable folks there and it does have the outrageous, hilarious postings by a certain tub thumper which are often gut busting, if you're not too sensitive.

Finally got the correct info for the international square dancers callers e-group -- busybusybusy, thirty posts this morning alone!

There used to be a great Joyce group on salon.com.

I am a regular contributor to some sites that appeal to my sense of nostalgia, like Monopede Mania and Blueballs for Ike.

I post here and on the Citizen Jazz board, and sometimes I lurk on AAJ. I joined a technical writer's list for a while, but quickly got bored. Mind you, it's very useful for practical questions, but not for just hangin' around.

Gordon, you said:

What are cdr "trees"?

you send someone blank cdr's and they record bootleg material for you. Often it is of such poor quality that it is really a waste of time and $$ IMO. I can understand if maybe you played tenor and wanted to hear every solo Wayne played with the band then it would be worth it BWTFDIK.
