Wrong number though.
Sweetness.

There are a lot of guys who have put up better numbers than Sayers, but no one who had his moves, elusiveness and grace.
In this department, Eric Dickerson comes in second.

Payton was the best I've ever seen. My favorite football player. Barry Sanders was a close second. If he had Emmitt Smith's O-Line, he would own every record there ever was.
Best college back I've watched in person was Marshall Faulk. We made some road trips to go see him. Unbelievably explosive.

What about Bo before he got injured? I've never seen anybody break tackles in the NFL like Bo. You just couldn't bring him down one-on-one.

Here's a Trojan that could have been one of the greatest ever, had he not been cut down in his prime by an extremely rare disease. His numbers even surpassed OJ Simpson's in college.

No. Not the second best ever.
cf Jackson, Bo; Sanders, Barry; and, in college, Griffin, Archie.

Reggie will be a great one if he doesn't get hurt. That whole, "if he doesn't get hurt" thing is what separates the greats from the could've-been's.

Floyd Little gave a talk at my highschool once. As I've mentioned here before, he said people shouldn't smoke because it's like trying to play football with a piano strapped to your back. Also, IIRC he said he had people helping him at SU so he could get through college without really being able to read very well.
I also saw Bo Nance pin somebody at S.U. once. He was a hell of a wrestler: it's a wonder he had so much trouble holding onto a football.

Gale Sayers, before he hurt his knee, was the best ever. He could not be tackled in 1965, even by the best teams.

Strong case?
The argument should be who is second best running back ever.

That's why Gayle Sayers cannot get the nod, albeit that he was perhaps the most electrifying and among the greatest.
Jim Brown.Period.

You cannot use injuries as an excuse. The discussion is about the BEST ever and that has to include durabilty.
Jim Brown is still the only back to average over 5 yards per carry for his career. And to paraphrase Richard Pryor...wasn't no brother playin then so you know he didn't get no blocking!
Sweetness played on terrible teams and gained all those yards, everyone knew that Barry was getting the ball all game long. Those two tie for second.
I really feel that running backs are born, not made. Every other position can be achieved with some talent and hard work. God chooses the running backs.

I attended many games between 1966 and 1980. Based on all the backs I watched as an attending fan during those years, the best by far was O.J. Simpson. If he had played on the Cowboys, or even the Vikings back then, forget about it.
Killer, or not, the Juice was a bonafide motherfucker on the gridiron.
