High School Jazz Band

Just thought I'd let you guys know. My high school jazz band, Sir Francis Drake High in San Anselmo, recieved unanimous 'superior' marks and a second place finish in the Redwood Empire Jazz Festival.
I also recieved an outstanding soloist award.

Anyways, I'm pretty jazzed (HAHA, i'm sooo funny) about it. We've been a pretty lousy band in the past but things have really turned around, it's fun. You guy's should come check it out.

What type of material do you play?

Hey, thanks. We're a latin big band which is actually a bit of a problem when we go to
festivals like these. Some of the judges frown upon it, we don't really fit their criteria.
My soloist award was from a timbale solo on Descarga Total by Orlando Valle.

Congratulations, Nate!! That's great!

I've heard Nate's group twice, guys, in San Rafael, about 20 miles north of San Francisco. I'm not sure if that group is still together, but they were a very talented and very young hard bop ensemble. Nate himself was the main attraction, a very gifted and energetic drummer, huge potential!

Congratulations!
The amount of hours of practice and preparation to get to this level is an acheivement by it's self...getting recognized once in a while is rewarding. Keep up the great work!

Thanks guys! It's often more rewarding to succeed with the school band then the groups I gig with.

Steve, I haven't been playing with Mind since everyone left to college but I have been playing a lot with a bunch of other guys. Mostly at that Starbucks up at Berkeley, it's a nice place to play and not have to sound very good, haha.
I've been taking a mini break for the last couple weeks because it was finals week at school and I've also been studying with some new teachers, but Amanda and Dan are back from Boston so maybe I'll try to hook something up somewhere. I'll let you know.

www.soundclick.com/natewong, I try to keep it updated.

From one drummer to another, Keep On Keepin' On, Nate!

Heeeeeeer's . . . Nate!

I love hearing this kind of news from young players, such as you. That's what keeps me young and (hopefully) vital with my drum students, too.

Glad to hear that you may be getting together with Amanda and Dan over the holidays, too. Where are they going to school? Berklee?

What's up with Inigo Markle Allen and Marty Fowler?

Happy Holidays, young man~

Hey, thanks man. Amanda is a jazz vocal major at Berklee. Dan's doing a performance major at North Eastern and also something else, he's dong a double major.

Marty and I still play very frequently; he's at a community college here. Recently I've just been playing with different groups, there are about a dozen guys that I play with regularly, and I've just been piecing together different combinations. It's definitely fun.

happy holidays to you too!

Glad that you and Marty are still connected, too.

Since you're relatively new to this board, Nate, you may not know that I had the great privilege of studying with Alan Dawson at Berklee in the early 60's.

Keep up the good work.

wow, that must have been awesome. I've been studying with Harold Jones and Chris Braun recently, it's been very cool.
